I'm lookin at a 275/40/17 for my 68 cuda. I currently have a 245/45/17 mounted on a 17x8" wheel. I know I can fit a 275. Problem is, a 275/40 is recommended for a 17x9 inch rim, not a 17x8. What if I mounted it on a 17x8? Anything bad? Can I do it? Is it not safe? What are your thoughts?

tires should also have a max and minimum rim width, look around for info but i would think thats fine

The tire place had a little bit of a hard time mounting my 275/40/17 on 17x8 rims.

I'm just running them this way for mock up. But they seem to drive fine.

Thought the side walls would be on more of a angle with a 275 on a 8. Pic looks more like what I'd expect the 245 to look like.

Main problem with oversize tyres on little rims is you get alot of tyre roll - the car would handle very poorly if you went to far.

I know mustang guys that run that size on that size wheel with no issues.

joes68340s asked for a head on picture of the 17x8 5.6" backspacing rims with 275/40/17 tires on my barracuda. I had to roll/bend the front bottom fender lip to get these to fit. I did a 8"x 1.5" bend. Plenty of room at 1.5" clearance, but I may run a final rim with a little less backspace.

But please note the pictures below are with front fender lip bottom bent back

very cool. i dont plan to run em on the front, maybe i suppose I could. for now, id like a little bit more meat on the back. 275/40 verses the 245/45. not much bigger but any lil bit helps i suppose.

Awesome guys! Heres my Dart with 275s. Ive been kickin around thoughts of 285s on the front when the time comes.

very cool! what did you do to get em to fit? I forget what suspension you have. are those on a 17x8 or 17x9? what backspace?

Yes, please post rim and tire sizes front and back. Back spacing would help too. What rims you running?
Your car has the best stance I've seen yet!
I would think the 285's might be a bit to tall and may rub?
More pictures please!!!!!!!

LOL. I've got so many've these pages bookmarked, I can't find 'em all!!!

Mopardude318, did you ever get a set mounted?

I tried some Fierce 275/40R17 tires on a set of '97 17x8 Mustang wheels, guy couldn't get the sidewall to pull down so he could mount them. Could be that the Fierce tires (Goodyear lower brand) are wider than most 275 tires, or the sidewalls are too stiff. Now I have a set of used tires I can't use without finding a different set of sheels, or a set of wheels that still needs a pair of tires.

For what it's worth, most of the Mustang guys I found that run that setup run a drag radial that is a little on the narrow side of the 275 section width spectrum.

And here is the thread where 72BBSwinger put his wheels and tires together in. FYI.
