Hello, I am building a 90' 318 to go into a Dakota. It is a stock new short block. I have a set of stock 714 heads, and a built set of 302, the 302's have been completely worked. including, 2.02, 160 valves, ported and polished, and new spring for a Comp Cams CL-20-212-2. This is just a mild cam.
My question is will the 302 heads work with this stock short block. It will have an Eddy performer and 650cfm carb. Any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

As I recall, 302s came stock on a '90 318. No reason they shouldn't work. '90 FSM lists the 318 at 9:1 SCR, so that looks good. If the heads have been shaved, that will bump it up a bit more.

302 heads have been on 318 from the factory since the mid-80's. You'll be fine.

It's a mild cam but check valve to piston and bore clearance. You should be good. The #302's are a great 318 head.

My 318 block is a LA roller cam cast stamp 1984 that came out of a 1985 Dodge Diplomat.302 heads. It's a great running engine.

Hell yeah they'll work. In a light Dak with that mild cam it'll be a tire melter.

i got a 1990 318 with 302 heads milled and ported 9:5 CR roller cam regrind 260/264 in my 67 Barracuda that thing hauls serious ***. Easily smoked my buddys turbo 4 cylinder rated at 260 H.P

read the OP's post - these 302s have 2.02 valves. You can notch the top of the 318 bore, but I'd save those 302s for a 360 build...

Imo 202 valves in a 318 heads are pointless. Unless the runners have been opened up to 340/360 size you will never get any benefits of using a larger valve without the larger ports.

2.02s clear a 318 bore just fine without notching. A 273 on the other hand, will require clearancing.

It would be interesting to flow a stock head, machine and install 2.02/1.60 valves and flow again. You can increase flow by back cutting valves so larger valves should increase flow to the point the ports stall. What's the restriction in 318 heads? Valves, port size or both. I say both but modifications to either will increase flow until the other can't flow any more. @pittsburghracer have you flowed any stock teen heads?

I didnt realize there was "room" for 2.02 valves on 302's.
Interesting to see what was involved to make a 2.02 fit.

Hello, thanks for all the insight, I did put up a picture of the valves in the head, it’s tight, but it works.
I am going to use this on this build, thanks again.

if ya 0 deck the block, and run a .035 head gasket you will have good quench, and bout 9.5:1 compression or lil more!! alta be a mean lil teen!!

Anybody flow 302's and then upped the valve size?
