I am a Big Block Guy, but a guy I work with offered up a 340 short block to me. Told me to make him an offer. What's the going rate for a good used 340 block these days? It is a +.030" block disassembled but comes with the stock crank, rods & pistons.

A guy at work.... how greedy is this guy?
How well are you fellas friendly with each other... LOL!

Offer him $400. For everything. What the heck!

He could possibly get $700 for the block. $200 for a crank ready to run. Rods aren’t really wanted to much. $100?

Ready to run short block all machined up and assembled? $1500

He is a good buddy. I have worked with him for many years. He is not looking to make a killing & I am not looking to flip it. Maybe I will stuff it in an A Body, Dakota or something someday.

OK good. If you guys are OK with each other.... Offer him $400 for everything.
It will take a good buck to get a short block done. So ask him to save you some bucks.

I told him to get the #'s off of the block for me first. If it a 340 or 360 I will take it. If it a 318 probably not (kind of like a Chevy 305). LOL. But he says he knows it is a 340. I told him to verify before he brings it in & I hand him the cash.

There are deals out there if you are patient and watch. I just purchased a 340 block standard bore, forged 4 speed crank, X heads, timing cover and intake for $400. Also got a set of 70 340 HP exhaust manifolds for $250. A LD4B intake for $200.

Well, I got better than a steal of a deal. Confirmed it is a 2780930-340 block. He told me to give him $150.00 for it all (block, crank rods and pistons). Best part is the pistons are not the used take out pistons. They are a new set of +.030 pistons that the block has already been piston fit to & the block has a mag tag on it that it has been magnuflux checked & has no cracks. Somehow the rings were lost so I will have to get a set of new rings to use these pistons. I'll mag check the crank & rods next if they weren't done already also.

Why do you care what the block vin is? I doubt he is going to sell it back to the original owner. He bought it is his. End of story!

I will have to look at the VIN when I get a chance. I don't care what the VIN # is but if someone needs it back for their car I would rather see them get it to put back in their car.

This is EXACTLY why it gets asked. I have 2 cars that I'd like to find the original blocks. It's a longshot, but, they do get reunited occassionally.

                Thanks for the consideration.

Nice buy and good on your buddy for the deal. Always good when things go that way

I am not a numbers guy. I think it is just a waste of time & money & effort. 90% of these cars were are daily drivers, drag raced & beat on repeatedly. So many do not have the original anything but so many are now restored & are supposedly "numbers matching", such a crock. Many forged, restamped blocks/transmissions, recreated fender tags, recreated broadcast sheets, VIN tags etc.

But when original can be reunited it is always cool to hear.

Engines, paperwork & so on is reunited more often than a lot of people would expect.

If it were mine and somehow, someway it was a match for someone's car I would have no problem with them getting it but
Just don't screw yourself in the process..... Someone would have to provide me with atleast what I have and probably more before I would let it go. In today's world when someone reunites a numbers matching block with their car it ups the ante on the resale value of the car and that's the reality of the numbers game. There will always be exceptions with the best of intent in wanting just have their car numbers correct but it won't be the norm. Been doing this too long and have seen the game.....

                  Nice deal OP....

                  Years ago...........

I got a call from my brother, he works at NAPA & customers knew he had a Mopar owning brother.

The guy is leaving town the next day, has a bunch of Challenger & other parts he wants gone. I had a Challenger at the time, so I called him.

T/A hood, sixpak manifold & a whole lot more, I took it all for $400.00 bucks - his price & this was over 25 years ago.

In the mix was a 1972 340 with a 2G VIN prefix, so I asked him if he knew what car it came out of.

                  He did.

He said it was the yellow '72 Road Runner with custom red stripes that used to park behind the Marine View apartment building, but he had not seen the car in years.

I had seen it back then & also knew the newer owner. It belonged to a guy I met in the 7th grade.

Joe's place was on my way home, so I stopped in.

                  He was not home.

I told his wife what was up, so she opened the garage door for me & I left the block for Joe.

He called to thank me when he got home. He did confirm that it matched his car first though, he was shocked.

I got so many parts that day at a great price, the block was free to him.

It felt good. It still feels good. :)

Believe me guys. I was not expecting him to say "give me $150.00-$200.00 & we will call it good. So, I said, "$150.00 sounds good" & he said "I'll take it"...
