I think I know what the OP is referring to, having just gone through this myself.
Swapped a 360 in place of a toasted 318- figured I'd save myself some work and get brand new mounts (spool type brackets and inserts) instead of messing with the inserts right now.
Well, I'm a realist and knew from the numbers that the "360" mounts were actually 318 mounts- no biggie, slap a spacer between the bracket and the rear lug on the driver's side and move on to something more important.
But when I got them, they weren't even close. Stamped from thinner metal than the stockers, and the spacing was more than 1/4" off.
The pictures don't look as bad as they actually are:
(Shown here compared to factory brackets)
Not only is the spread too wide, the lower bolt hole on the front side of the bracket is actually drilled on the "curve" of the stamping, and a washer is needed there as well just to bring the front holes onto the same plane.
So the moral of the story is: Buy a bag of washers before you go to mount these up, even on a 318. There's only 1 bolt on each side that doesn't require spacing on these chintzy things.
Oh, one more thing- the hole through the insert for the through bolt is waay oversized. I actually cut a length of 1/2" EMT for each side and drove them in there to take up most of the slop.
Saddest part is that all the brands are probably the same, just reboxed...
