I've picked up a mid 70s RV 413 shortblock. It's got a smaller diameter, but thicker harmonic dampener on it. Supposed to be steel crank & internally balanced... Has anybody swapped the timing cover and balancer on these to an earlier forged crank unit?

The balancer doesn't matter if it's an internally balanced assembly. But because it's thicker than even a cast crank balancer is - no pass car pulleys will align. Plus it just looks stupid.

Switch it out, it will work fine as long as you keep an internal balance damper.

The thick damper might have stuck the pulleys out further so they would line up with the huge waterpump that bolted on to the end of the heads and the block. When you change it over to the car heads and pump you probably need to change the damper too.
