is there any way to identify what camshaft I have by casting numbers? On one end it has a casting number of 452 and on the other end it has 822 and another unidentifiable number. There are no stampings on the ends of the shaft. It is from a block number 3898830. I assume it is original. It looks in good shape but I do not know much about it. The goal is to build a moderate hp engine 500 hp. Any references? The crankshaft is a forged one and the rods are “6 pack rods” if that would help at all.

Any numbers on the end faces? If so, list them someone may be able to identify it for you. 65'

Could always mock it up in a block (or on V-blocks on the bench) and use a dial indicator... I see what looks like fine rust pitting - what kind of shape are the lobes in? It needs to be checked for lobe taper also if you're going to reuse it.
Frankly, as inexpensive as hydraulic flat-tappet cams are, especially for your hp goal, I would seriously consider just buying a new cam/lifter set.

Are thinking of reusing it? I wouldn't, not on a bet.

Get a new camshaft to meet your needs. If you want to make 500hp, do your HW, it takes a lot more effort than you think it does.

I plan on stroking it, new heads, intake and headers, as well as new cam. Lots to do and much HW.
