Im going for a nasty street strip car on a $3'000 budget.. the base is a 440 duster iv affectionately ned the "mopar mower" ....... even though the only thing its mowing down now is the parking spot it sits in! :D lol
    So heres the question..

Iv got a set of 906 heads in damn good condition right now, but need to make a decision on wether or not i should get those mechined with a lil port n polish, maybe a good valve job and some hardened seats. OR drop $800 on set of Edlebrock proformer RPMs an slap them puppies on there to add some bark!

    Anddddddd go!

i like where your going with this nitrous idea.. but id probably end up blowing up my engine with that one and be back to square one. But who knows, maybe one day!!!

what about an average cost for mechining my 906 heads? Could i fot that in the budget?.. not a lot of experiance with these things.

Nitrous ( 125-150 shot), is cheap, easy,& addictive. I would pay attention to fuel line size (1/2"- AN -8 size), fuel pump quality ( a high quality Edelbrock/ Carter mechanical pump, a GOOD electric pump, Holley blue/Carter HP 4601 electric...), and at least a good stock electronic ignition . MSD/Holley digital box, even better. Every fifty ponies of spray, minimum 2 degrees retard total timing,@2500-3000. As for budget heads, check out Edelbrocks EZ heads line,& 440 Source's Stealth heads.

Karl, those are tasty. Lucky enough to get a few rides, in a pair of well prepped rides with these. Before they became aftermarket available, it was a rare treat.

My bracket car had 906s with manley high flow valves, no port work and a rocker stand on one broke in the middle of a points season, needed heads quick so I got a set of the very first batch of the RPMs made. I changed valve springs, put em on and had to make new push rods, otherwise....it ran faster with the 906s LOL, thats tells you they wanted more cam than I was running at the time. Im gonna fix those 906s some day.

      Edelbrock #60189 Cylinder Heads

An excellent product, but they are $775 'EACH' for a complete 'HEAD'.

If you're on a budget, that's a tough 'wall' to break.

3k on the whole car? I wouldn't spend the money to have the 906s worked I would invest in a good cam intake and carb to run with what you have going.

If you want something cheap for the street, have the 906s done by a competent shop with good equipment. Have everything done - new guides, spring seats cut, etc. Have them put a back cut on the intake valves with a 5 angle cutter-type valve job. That work will get you the same or more than quick hand cleanup. Then bolt them on with a cam that's small enough to keep the valves out of the pistons. Safe your etra money for a decent convertor and/or some gears. Then run it. That should give you close to an honest 1hp/inch with some great torque. Enough to run low 12s or quicker with good matched driveline parts in an A body. The engien is only a part of making a car fast. If you only have $3K, only about half can be spent on the engine, with the rest on the stuff to support it.

With only a $3k budget I'd just do a clean up on the 906's and focus on building a solid bottom end. Then save your pennies and get a set of the new Trick Flows to replace the 906.

X2 on 451cuda. balance the motor with lite pistons, a good chain, oil pump, deep pan and rods.

Lol there seems to be a missconseption here.
I should have clairified earlier i reckon but it aint like 3000 is all im gona spend on the car period. Thats just how much i have saved up at the moment to kick off the build.. Ill have plenty more i just gota save it up over a few pay checks. Im really liking the idea of just redoing the 906s though! And iv already got a good intake manifold, my carb is a holley 1406 double pumper but its all out of wack and needs a rebuild as well.
Tranny is a 727 with reverse manual valve body and i have the 8.75 rear on it already.

1406 is an Edelbrock number, are you sure it's a Holley?

The Trick Flows are going to be hot but about $2k per pair. For a budget and much better
than any cast iron heads, I would get the 440 Source aluminum heads for $1k/pr complete.

So without knowing more about what you actually have now it's pretty hard to say where the first $3000 should go. Do you expect to be able to drive the car for $3000? You could build a basic 450 horsepower 440 for $3000 with the 906's. But the chassis and rest of the drive train will need close to that before it's safe. What about the transmission? Torque converter? Exhaust system? Rear axle?!?

The best advice here has already been given, start with a good bottom end and work your way out. The biggest way to waste your money is to try to stretch it too thin or build a mismatched setup around parts you can get cheap or have lying around.

I agree map out exactly what you intend for the car to do....then research some similar builds. Chances are, some has done something close enough and you can learn/apply what successes and failures they may have had

Go with the Edlebrock RPM upper end kit, RPM, heaads cam, intake and Carb. You can not go wrong with the price
