67 formula s barracuda 8 3/4 standard or option?

    Just wondering if a 67 Barracuda formula s with a 273 commando 4 bbl 4 speed would come with an 8 3/4 rear or was the 8 3/4 an option?

    99% sure it would have come with an 8-3/4. I had a 67 Dart GT convertible with a 273 4-bbl automatic and came with a factory 8-3/4. Usually if it had a 4-speed it would have one, but having said that, it is Chrysler after all...

      I owned a '67 barracuda Non-S convertible with the Formula S options, the 235 H.P. motor & suspension......it had a 7 1/4" out back. Definitely bone stock too.....even had the original exhaust system.

      My 67 273 Commando/auto Barracuda with HD suspension, non-S, came with a 7-1/4. I have the window sticker and the broadcast sheet (axle code 608, pinion code 34). My understanding is that HiPo engine 4-speed cars got the 8-3/4. Sure-Grip would be an option on top of that.

        I believe 8 3/4 is standard equipment on S cars. Both our 67 S auto did and 69 S 4spd did. By the way welcome back Stephen:thumbsup:

        Here is the specs page from the 1967 Barracuda brochure. According to it, with the the 273-4 engine, the manual trans got an 8.75 3.23 standard, the auto came with a 7.25 3.23 standard. Sure-Grip was an extra cost option in all cases (see the paragraph under "Transmissions" — the table is a little confusing — when it says "std." in the Sure-Grip column it is referring to the RATIO that is standard when you order the Sure-Grip, it is not saying the Sure-Grip is "standard" for any drivetrain combo). Elsewhere in the brochure it describes the Formula S package — it doesn't say anything about it including any axle type or Sure-Grip. That said, it is very likely that dealers often "loaded up" Formula S cars with the extra-cost performance options, and of course original buyers often ordered them as well.

          The 8 3/4” was only standard equipment only on the 383 cars in 67, it was an option on all others. Not until 68 did it become standard equipment with a small block, and only on 340 cars.

            A 7 1/4 behind a 273 4bbl... I bet Chrysler did a lot of warranty work for that idea.

            I believe they did. Although the sure grip 7 1/4 was pretty tough.

            so much so that Chrysler made the 7 1/4” Suregrip standard equipment behind all 4 speed cars in 66
