According to my knowledge / memory all factory 1970 340 swingers came with the kelsey hayes 4 piston disc brakes. Reason for asking is I'm going to look at a 70 340 swinger for a friend who interested in purchasing. The seller states that it is a 4 wheel drum car. Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Oh for sure.
Has a data tag which reads LM23H0R.
E55 D21 also on the tag. Still need to view in person as well as check out other tell tale signs. Sway bar, coin on K frame, torque boxes, rally dash, body numbers, etc. Just looking for confirmation on the disc brake thing. 68 and 69 model years drums were standard with disc being an option on the 340 and 383 darts.
Thanks again for any and all input.

1970 340 A cars were std with Disc brakes. 1971 340's were std with drum

How can disk/drum AND drum/drum be standard on the 340 swinger?

Good question
I think what they're insinuating is that all models across the board get drum, dual master cylinder and auto adjustable brakes standard regardless of powerplant? That said 340 cars get the disc standard equipment and all other models they are available at a extra cost ???

So interesting that they swapped back to Drum fronts on 340 A cars in 71. $22.50 option for disc in 1971 Had to get the $41 power option too... so about $63, about a full weeks paycheck at minimum wage back then!

Save those pennies.

I would be surprised if a 1970 car had 4 piston calipers; I believe most had moved to 2 piston, floating head calipers.

well, prepare to be shocked... our cars had two versions of disc calipers: 4 piston units (thru 72) and single piston (from 73 on up).

you've probably got pontiac on the brain.

Update..... called about a 70 swinger for sale and after asking a few questions including the brakes I was told drum brakes all around. In the limited photos I saw a drum brake master. That led to my question. Went yesterday to see the car and volia it has disc brakes. Owner was surprised. Thanks to all . Going back to test drive in a few days.

Horse trading 101, never tell the seller of anything good you find!

:poke:
I agree to a point. Last year looking at a different 70 340 swinger for a different friend, we went to see the car. Young kid didn't know much. No fender tag. He was told it was all original. Previous owner had it a long time. Vin tag on the dash said it was a 340 car. Rad cradle #'s were covered up with fresh paint. Crawled under to check the block and trans. Again volia, #'s matching ! Kid had no idea. Both my friend and the seller were looking at me waiting for the news. Tourque boxes were present, coin on the K frame, sway bar and disc brakes, rally dash etc. all present, wrong rad, no shroud, fuel injection, no heater box, visible patches in the trunk floor. Car ran and drove well. Had a lot of little things left half done or shotty workmanship. Recommend a strong pass which was taken. Back to the number thing, I looked at both my friend and seller and asked "who am I working for"? Before I got an answer I blurted out "it is a number matching engine, trans and vin tag". Some might think that was stupid. Usually it's a exercise in a battle of wits. Neither party total trusts the other. When one is honest and it's proven, then possibly when I give my reason for my offer (if even interested) it may or may not be accepted as honest too ? You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. The seller appreciated the education and eventually we told him we were going to pass.
Eventually found my friend a very nice original paint 67 Coronet R/T for a few $$$ more.

70 swinger usually has the vin on pass side trunk rail about where the stripe would be. Under the weatherstrip most of the time
Yes I agree, but again I didn't want to ask if it was okay to pull off and possibly tear the weather stripping. Tried to look at the underside but was difficult to read. By that point I was convinced it was what it was supposed to be just wasn't for us.

The last year HERE that Chryslers had 4 piston calipers was 1968. Nothing to do with Pontiacs.

I should add: here in OZ we tended to get US 'left overs'. As an example, the 1967 Dart Hardtop was sold here as a 1969 Valiant Hardtop. body from the front windscreen back was fully imported & frond sheet metal was local design.

Torque boxes were only on the 4-speed darts. If the car was an automatic, then something seems fishy. You never mentioned the rear end or springs. Can also be a tail-tail sign. 10 inch drums in the rear? 340's had shoulder belts. Door panels were different on the Swinger 340's.

Both cars were 4spd's . Also both had as they should 8 3/4 rear ends. Sorry forgot to mention this.

Torque boxes were only supposed to be on the 4-speed darts. Some auto cars have them, rare, but they are out there.
