Hoping someone has done this and it's an easy one to answer. I have a 70-72 Duster rear bumper that I want to put on my 74 Duster project. Is it as simple as removing the 74 inner liner and shock absorbers and bolting 70-72 bumper brackets into the exsisting holes where the shock-absorbjng bumper mounts came out? Any other considerations?

I took the complete assembly off and installed a 71 valiant bumper and brackets. I believe I had to drill holes for the 71 brackets. Kim

There are a few considerations. On the ‘70-‘73 main brackets the outer hole should just need to be drilled on the ‘74, and the reinforcement on the inside of the rear crossmember that goes to the frame rail should actually have the hole to locate it. It was on my ‘74 anyway, the reinforcement tab behind the crossmember had the hole you just need to drill it through the crossmember.

The inner hole for the brackets lands right in the middle of the giant hole for the shock mount. So, you either have to make a bracket of some kind or weld up the crossmember and add a reinforcement like the outside of the rail.

And that still doesn’t address the outer brackets, but I don’t run those.

The other thing is that the ‘70-‘73 cars have a filler piece of sheet metal that’s on that lower panel that covers the gap between the end of the bumper and the body. Your ‘74 will not.

I wrote up most of the process here

Tucked in 74 Rear Bumper. All Sorts Of Wrong. I Hate it!

I also have the bracket set up I installed first detailed here

And the finished version where I basically made my ‘74 look like a ‘70-73 is here (welded up the crossmember, added reinforcing tabs like the originals, added the filler to the rear panel)

Thanks for the quick replies and the links! Good to know I haven't set myself up for too big of a "just one more thing" project.
