Anyone have any recommendations for a good local transmission shop in the Maryland area that has solid experience with 727s?

Thanks,

Why would you pay thousands of dollars for something that you can do?

Thanks for your thoughts. Knowledge is being acquired over time for sure, but if I have the funds and limited time to do the work, why not find the best who can do it right?

I had Passon's do my A833 for me for only $750. ATI is in the same range for sure.. It's not thousands.. but hundreds...

The most of us these cars are hobby cars and not under a big time restriction like have to get it done to get to work the next day or anything like that. I find it kind of fun to learn about these things.
Two Winters ago I bought a manual and rebuilt my four Speed for $99 the cost of the rebuild kit. And just recently I rebuilt my 904 which is basically the same as a 727 inside for $105 for the rebuild kit and it was twice as easy as the 4 speed. Just say'n ...
Personally I trust myself with my own life more than I do somebody else. If the transmission shop forgets to put a part in and your car goes through the back wall of your garage they have insurance people that will pay out if you're alive to get anything.

Wow those are great prices. Make sure to include the value of your time for a complete cost. My time is very valuable... lol

Glad you were able to make yourself feel good...

My time is extremely valuable! (To me)
that's why I try and work on my hobbies as much as I can.
Just our individual ways of looking at things.
I always encourage people to try themselves.
I had one member tell me recently if a guy couldn't rebuild three of these in a day at his shop he wasn't worth having. With that said after I've taken one of these apart I'm pretty sure the next time now I could literally do one in less than eight hour day for sure. I don't think it actually took me 8 hours to actually do any of them. I just drag it out over several days working an hour here and an hour there because I like it for meditation and it's fun Learning something new to me. Again this is just my Outlook and the way I look at things and not the way other people should.
If plug-and-play is your thing then enjoy your hobby the way you like it not the way I do...
Good luck and happy hunting

8 Hours... Soooooo I figure by how well your posts are written your time is worth at least $100 per hour...

8 hours x $100 + parts + manuals puts you just north of $1000... Well done.

Makes this A&A 904 look like a great deal less core trade-in...

904 transmission - A&A Transmissions

Thanks for the encouragement.. I'll add trans rebuilding to my wrenching resume... swapping motors, replacing cams, porting heads, replacing clutches, rebuilding carbs, rebuilding clutch pedal linkage, installing shifters, swapping rear ends, gawd there's so much more but I'm getting tired of typing... etc.. But you already knew all that about me.. :)

My lawyer changes $500 per hour and I like me more than him and I'd rather rebuild my transmission than do what he does. Swapping rearends and porting heads - YAWN! :poke:

YAWN? Really J? Now you're belittling my wrenching efforts... I thought you encouraged... lol

I got the "expert" advice I was looking for via PMs a few hours after posting... The only thing that's a YAWN is your contributions to the thread... It's not a total loss though.. There is some entertainment value to it.

Thank you for letting me know how you feel about your "hobby".

Entertainment value is number one! Isn't the car for our entertainment.
It was all meant to be encouraging of course but you never know what it takes to get somebody motivated sometimes? Good Lord don't tell me I can't do something!

I will tell you this.. Now I know why your message count is so high.. YAWN

Yes you can see that it's high because of a lot of entertainment value for sure but please don't discount every last nut and bolt of my car that I've showed everybody? Not caring about all the ridicule that I open myself up for that most people won't post a damn thing about their car because they don't want to hear it . how to rebuild 4 -speeds, automatics or at least brought them along as I did mine and show them all the mistakes that I did along the way. Porting heads changing rear ends four times.... welding 8 point roll bar welding in my own frame connectors etc etc etc etc. And it's just backyard hobbyist home garage stuff not high end. I do try and encourage others and I'm saying probably nobody cares about your transmission more than you.
Sure go ahead get the last word and I'll leave you alone I'm sure you have a nice reputable shop and I'm glad
J par OUT...

Only 4? YAWN

I'll drop you a line if I need any motivation...

Sorry that yawn stuck in your craw so bad LOL. Kind of looks like I was the only one contributing to your thread here. I was just curious after a couple weeks now how your transmission turned out? how good of a job the shop did? how long it took and how much it costs? I mean obviously it's none of my business but it is a good rule of thumb for people out here thinking about having the same thing done as compared to doing it yourself. Besides entertainment I thought that was another purpose of the forum? was to kind of educate people on things or get educated?

When I called Aamco on a 904 they said $1,800 drive the car in and drive the car out. I called a HomeTown shop and they said drop the transmission itself, and you picked the transmission backup for $900.

To swerve back on subject, i know ATI advertises alot, but I wouldn't let them wipe my butt. They built me a converter. It vibrated. They swore it was everything except their product. Made me jump through hoops to prove it was the converter. Gave them another chance rebuilding a full manual trans for my Sport Fury. Won't go into park. Called the owner, and he proceeded to tell me it wasn't their fault. They build thousands of transmissions for taxis etc. I told him that doesnt fix my trans. Pulled it back out, and took it back up to them. They opened it up to find the VB they put in was from a 904. The park rods are different. They tell me to come back later to pick it up. I said fix it now, it's already apart, and I'm not making a 2 hour round trip again. They fix it. I take it back home, and install it again. Drive the car for a few miles. Reverse goes out. I take it back out AGAIN, take it to a different shop because ATI refused to warranty the trans. The other shop opens it up, and the reverse piston is broke in half. According to him, when you go full manual, and up the pressure, you need to put in a billet piston, because the stock ones are weak. He also told me he had to put in several heli coils. I take the trans back home, and install it AGAIN. works fine, except it shifts so hard going into 3rd, it shakes the whole dash. Did this since ATI rebuilt it. ATI said it's supposed to shift hard! Ordered a new VB from another vendor, and it's helped alot. Bear in mind, I brought them a complete, untouched core, but they chose to make one from the junk they had laying around. Also bought a converter at the time I had the trans done. It was supposed to be a 3000 stall. I can't footbrake this car over 1200 rpm. All i can say is you've been warned.

And I took my free transmission that came along with a $50 360 I bought from Craigslist a couple years ago that I threw under the awning of my house for a couple years in the weather and pulled out and put $105 rebuild kit in it and a $92 Transco stage 3 full manual shift kit in it and it works flawlessly to the track at the track and all the way home. And please let me remind you that I did this all for the very first time just watching videos on YouTube and taking my time. Oh yeah and plenty of questions answered from a lot of good people here on the forum.

Thanks for the swerve... :) Appreciate the input. It's amazing how people can have difference experiences. Got a bunch of positive PMs on ATI. If I ever use them I will let you know how it goes.

I know right!? Ever since I've rebuilt the last transmission and I'm out on the streets and I bang that gear and it just snaps at the instant I hit the ratchet I want to re Pat myself on the back again..LOL that thing works awesome... YEP, I think I like this Hobby...
You're my hero J....

I can't believe how much shops from other areas of the country charge to do rebuilds sometimes! My trans guy charges $400 for an auto on the bench, and transmissions are all he does! Had a problem with one of his guys using the A-999 planetary I sent over to him to install, his guy didn't use the shaft I sent with it, Dave rebuilt the entire trans again for free!! Must be a Detroit thing!!!

Hey Cosgig, thanks for the input. That's a great value for sure. ATI quoted $700. Couple other local shops were a few $100 less..

Maybe check with a couple local car clubs and get the skinny on a good shop, or person in your area!! Especially the Mopar guys!!
