Got the left quarter started. I have one more coat of putty to sand on the right quarter then its ready for primer. Got the stripes off. They were a pain. Got all the old seam sealer out of the drip rails. Also got the new left door hinges installed & the door aligned to the quarter. I have to tell ya that the old single stage paint is tuff. It took 100 grit on a da to sand it down. Hopefully ill have both quarters in primer in the beginning of next week. Then ill start on the doors. Door shouldnt take long. They are in very nice shape.

I love Basin Street Blue! I still cringe when I think of the 1972 Barracuda roller in that color that I let get away from me when they were still available for a few hundred dollars...

Got the body all straight. Also jambed the engine bay, trunk area, bottom of the hood & trunk lid. Ill start to tape it up & clean clean clean the garage. Goal is to have it painted by Thanksgiving.

Got base & clear sprayed on it today. Not happy with it. Tried a new cheaper clear. The clear i use is the PPGs 4000 clear but its just getting way to expensive. The 4000 clear is $400 a gal. & a qt. of hardener is $100. Now it sprays awesome but dam its getting expensive. The clear i used today is the shop line brand. Ive heard nothing but good things about it. I just just couldnt get it to flow out & got more orange peel than i like. Not to mention when i use the 4000 clear i can spray the whole car plus jambs & get 3 coats on everything. Now with the shop line clear i used today i was a qt short of putting 3 coats on & didnt spray the hood. Hood is getting satin black. I like to spray with the temp at least 75 for the clear & with the 4000 clear you can really load it on. Ive done jobs where if it wasnt for the little dirt in it i wouldnt even have to wet sand & buff.

I think it looks good from what I can see in the pics. If it orange peeled on you to start, did you up the air pressure a little to try and make it flow better?

yes it helped a little i didnt lay the clear on as heavy as i do with the 4000 clear never sprayed this clear & didnt know how heavy to lay it on with the 4000 clear there is a fine line before it runs if you know that line you can lay a very nice smooth finish

Ill post some pictures before & after sanding & buffing. Also putting the stripes on, painting the hood black, he wants the 340 wedge decal on the hood. I bought a paint stencil from CHALLENGERGARY to paint it on the hood.

I'm not a pro painter, but have always wanted to learn. When I finally got my own place to be able to spray stuff, I've learned a lot. That's how I discovered that upping the air pressure helps the orange peel a little. I painted a golf cart body for our golf cart, and set the gun to the recommended pressure. I was painting it EV2-Hemi Orange. It sure enough ended up looking like an Orange!! I just left it, and told all the people at the campground that it's a special process to make orange paint look that way!

I'll fix it next time I swap bodies back to the orange one. The body I have on it now is GY3 Curious Yellow. I jacked the air pressure up for that one, and it came out slicker than cat crap on linoleum!

Check out SouthernPolyureethanes best clear! Maybe too late for you but others can reap the rewards.
DMopar the color of the primer(sealer) needs to be correct for the color of topcoat. Make a difference on some colors especially orange.

Well i started to sand it with 1500 & i noticed small pin holes all over. Im not sure what they are or from. I had to use 800 grit to get them out. So i decided to reclear it. I also decided to spray it with better clear. Ive always used PPGs DBC 4000 clear & thats what i got. Its alot more expensive but wow what a difference. I blocked the doors & fenders today with 800 grit & resprayed them with 4000 clear. So much better.

                              Sounds like solvent popping. :(
