I bought a 8 3/4 rear end minus the 3rd member for my 66 dart. bought a 3rd member from a guy here on a body( 3:55 sure grip) had a guy install it. I have no motor in car right now.. pushed the car out of garage to put on trailer and heard a clunking noise coming from rear...what could it be????

thanks!!!

I assume the drive shaft is not connected and flopping around. Need a little more info. Can you pin point noise center or ends, will it make the noise when you go Forward and back, turning and straight, When do you hear the noise?

I would say it is the sure-grip releasing and grabbing.
They do make some noise that you do not notice with the motor running.
If you are worried jack one side of the car up and rock a wheel back and forth.
This will give you an idea of what play you have in the rear.

Also,
Does it have anit-slip additave added to the gear oil?

The guy who put the pumkin in the housing and then installed the complete rear end in my car, said the rear end was "tight".. then I loaded the car onto my trailer to tow it it down to south florida to have my new motor installed. when we unloaded it, i heard the clunk" also felt it...was just trying to get an idea of what it could be, either 3rd member problem or axle ???? thanks!

Most likely the rear is dry, it needs to be run down the road to warm it up and get fluid lubricated through everything.
Sure grips do not like to be dry and make double sure that the guy that put the rear in used anti-slip lube additive.
