Hi...I have to change a rear axle on my Dart. I have never done this before and wondered if anyone has helpful advice?
After taking of the brake drum, I see there are 5 nuts....is it as simple as taking off the 5 nuts and pulling out the axle?
Any tips or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Welcome aboard. To answer your question yes. But there is a little more you need to consider. Is it a left or right side? By that i mean do you see a lock tab on one of the nuts that keeps a axle end play adjuster form turning? Or if you pull the axle and find you have seal wheel bearings then forget about the adjuster part mentioned above. If you pull it out and have tappered roller bearings and the bearing race is kinda floating back and forth, than you need to know how to reinstall it and adjust the axle end play.

Thanks and thanks for the quick reply. I will take a closer look at it, I didnt notice but Ill double check it in the AM. It is on passenger side.

Here is a little breakdown of what you will find. When you start pulling it apart you will see the adjuster for the axle end play adjustment. Once you have it back together you will need to adjust for end play.

If it were me and that far into it, I would pull the other side, replace both axle seals, check and repack bearings, (can be done on the axle) and replace the outer gaskets. Seals are cheap, gaskets are cheap and when you are done you know what you have.

Here, download yourself a free shop manual. This is a 69, but very close to "same as 68". Thank AbodyJoe for this!!!
