Ever have one of those days / projects this rear end is kicking my butt. Anyone know where I can get one of these spider gears
Open carrier ? Should be easy to find close by . I thought Dr Diff had them but didnt find any on his site.
SGB, I wanted to let you know it is a sure grip 741 case. Don’t know if this is what you have or not.
I got a set maybe, just pay shipping. It was a bare carrier so I dont know what model it came out of. [FOR SALE] - 8.75 open spider and side gears
I believe the OP has a spicer style sure grip unit. Is the one of the 4 pinion gears that broke? How did you break it? Please post up a picture of the whole unit but I’m guessing it’s this style. Cliff Ramsdell
If its the cross style as above mine may not work. Does anyone know if the spider gears are different between SG's and opens? This is a (broken spider gear) clutch type.
Here is another picture I took this morning. Not sure how it broke went to take it apart and it was in three pieces. This rear end came out of a 67 Barracuda
The ends of the cross pins have a rounded side and a ramped side. The case halves have only a ramped side, the other side being empty. In order for the unit to work, the ramps have to be facing eachother. When you apply power to the pinion, it turns the case. But with the wheels tied to the road, the sidegears resist the turning. This causes the ramps on the case to ride over the ramps on the crosspins, forcing the spider gears into the side gears, which squeezes the clutches together and thereby clamping the whole thing solid, depending on how the unit is set up. So, in your pics; it looks to me like the ramps are not oriented correctly, which is why I asked. In Pishta's post, #11, they appear to be correct
I have it the way it supposed to be the pointed end down and the opposite pointed end up. If this is incorrect then I’m truly confused.
