8.75 sure grip upgrade options

I would go along with that were it not for one thing. Ford never made a two spider gear Track Lock. They were all 4 pinion. All the Mopar 8 3/4 cone type sure grips are two pinion. .......and NO ONE sells replacement spider gears. You can almost get a 9" spider gear set at WalMart. lol
just a correction ,, Ford did make traction-locks with 2 spider gears early on when the T-lok came into production in 1968 to replace the Equa-lok units, i have rebuilt several of them over the last 50 years and just rebuilt a 9 inch a month ago with a factory 2 spider T-lok. All aftermarket units today are of the 4 spider gear type and the majority of the old factory T-loks are of the 4 spider gear configuration.

Thanx all. Looks like trapster and Dr Diff might be a way to go and not damage the pedigree of the car too much. Not sure what ratio diff I have but the drive shaft revolves 1.75 times when the tire makes 1 rotation..?? Was hoping that is possible to just reconfigure my rear end by adding extra parts. Alternatively, is it possible to disconnect the drive shaft, pull my axles, remove my open third member and slip a mopar sure grip third member back in and connect the axles and drive shaft? It would be nice to be able to slip a 3:55-4:11 posi in. I can hold my own doing engine and electrical stuff but scared to death of gear lash, etc. I would have an expert help me. Ford in a Mopar?? My dad and his dad would roll over in their grave. LOL. BTW, who can make me a replacement fender tag? Thanx again.

On an 'open' diff, both wheels need to turn together to get your ratio or do the math but don't know what that is with one wheel turning. Years ago someone posted what it was. One wheel on the ground or chocked and the other wheel free (off the ground).

ok, but how turnith both wheels if one must be stopped? I did the chocked method, thanx

Or the poor person's way

Turning one wheel in an open is changed by the spiders. Ratio is 2 to 1, so 2 times 1.75 is 3.5. So your ratio is LIKELY 3.55.

I could be wrong. Get two people to turn both wheels in the same direction at the same time, count the driveshaft.

Thanks! The 4 pinion design is all I've ever seen whether it was open or a limited slip. I have a 4 pinion open carrier in the rear end in my spare bedroom. Soon to be a 4 pinion Track Lock.

I have a 95 Dakota that's pretty much on it's last 5 legs....thinking about doing a 'back yard' locker when the weather gets cooler and after I haul out the last load of scrap lol

if i am reading this correctly you want to change an open 9 inch diff into a trac-lok ,, the only way a 9 inch OPEN carrier can be turned into some type of locked diff is to use a mini spool ,, lockright or spartan type locker ,, welded up ,, or stack 2 side gear thrust washers under both side gears ,, the open carrier spider gears are different than the traction-lok version ,, the traction-lok spider gears have a shoulder to clear the case halves and clutch hub when assembled and the side gears in a traction-lok one has a shoulder to fit into the case half ,, the other side ( clutch hub side ) has no shoulder so it fits into the clutch side of the case. just cheaper/easier to buy a new traction-lok unit.
