so I have my 5 frictions and steels all in the front drum, running a .060 snap ring and this is with the frictions soaked in atf. I can only get .045 feeler gauges in there. Just trying to figure out how much soaked vs. dry what the gap should be and if I need to get the plate milled or just pull out a friction and go with a 4 disc and leave an extra steel in to keep a proper measurement.

I looked through lots of threads and everyone likes to see .010-.015 per disc clearance. But I wasn’t sure if that was a wet or dry measurement. Thanks in advanced for your replies.

    Big fat steel on top.
Mines to tight and looking for .075-.080" at top pressure plate and snap ring.

Just so I’m clear, you get a total of .050 so .010 clearance per friction? Or when you assemble it all and you put your feeler gauge between the plate and snap ring you only get .010?

You know what sometimes the clearance will change when you assemble the drum onto the pump and air check it. No, not .010 total. I don't go by the .010-.015 per disc because the packs can be anywhere from 3 to 6 discs. And .030 is too tight and .090 is too loose.

That is some tuff steel. You can use the lower pressure plate from a forward clutch, just check the clearance to make sure it doesn't contact. anything.

Took it to my buddies place, took a little off of it and now sitting at .065 clearance. Gonna let we ride. Time to assemble it and air check it all.

I've always had to machine the pressure plate down with 5 discs too. And I always measure them dry. Not sure how much diff wet makes but i'd think you should be fine at .065

They're different wet than dry. Once soaked you need to air check the drum on the pump to squish out the extra fluid to get the final clearance number.

An easier way is to use the Alto Powerpack. They come with thinner steels and/or frictions and some have the thinner pressure plate.

Watch those "complete" kits. They sell you altos for the direct pack in sets of thick fours. I have a hard time finding enough thin altos to do the forward and direct for the 904. The 727s I can find direct only packs with 6-7 altos and thin top plate for around 85.
