Hello everyone! Working on my 64 Valiant with a 727 transmission tonight and am attempting to replace the inner oil seal of the speedometer cable pinion because it’s been leaking pretty bad. I got the cable out, and got what was left of the old oil seal out. I bought the 3 gasket kit from Mopar Mall that was for 60-65 727’s since the outer seal is smaller than post-65 ones, however the inner oil seal that was sent to me is a lot bigger than the one that came out of the transmission. Been trying to figure out some way to be able to use it, but it keeps folding once I try to put it in the housing and it doesn’t want to go in at all trying to fit it in with the pinion like the manual says to do. Anyone have any ideas on if I bought the wrong part or if it’s user error and there is some trick to getting these in that I’m just not aware of? Thanks for any input.

Not sure of any difference between the early 904 and 727 trans speedo parts. But you should not have a 727 trans in a 64 Valiant. The original trans in your car should be a push button 904.

This is the type you have?

I just replaced the speedometer pinion seal on the 904 in my ‘65 Dart convertible. As I recall, the FSM tells you to put the seal on the cable housing, with the outer lip toward the pinion and push it into the pinion gear. That’s what I did, and mine quit leaking. I’d like to find a source for the seal too, in case I need one in the future. Fortunately, the rebuilt tranny I bought came with all the orings and the seal on a twist tie attached it.

I don’t think there is much difference, but you all are probably right in that it’s a 904 and not a 727.

Yes to both pictures for what I have and what I purchased. The OE part number they list in the description of the seal kit matches up to everything that I have seen as the part number of 2124328, but upon very close inspection, the part number on the seal they sent me is 1240382 which matches up to GM transmissions. Not sure if that was a mistake on their part or if they think it supersedes the Mopar part number, but it’s just huge in comparison to the old one.

I think they have a dyslexic person in their parts shipping department.

Well, back to the drawing board for this one. I spoke with an associate at Atlas Obselete Parts (Mopar Mall), and they said that the part they sent me was a superseded part number that is “supposed” to fit, and that they would refund me since it didn’t work at all being too large. If anyone knows of a real superseded part number, someone reputable who can reproduce gaskets like that, or a seal from a different vehicle that is going to be the same size, then any input would be absolutely amazing.

There never was a superseded number for 2124328.
It was a good number until 1980 when Chrysler discontinued it.
