A-body Console Shifter & Switch Questions

Hey folks, I’m curious about two things. Did the shifter attached below have a mechanism to prevent sliding into the wrong gears if you were in first? Or could you row into all the way into neutral from first with no stops in between? Also, has anyone ever put a couple switches/panel in the ashtray on that console? How’d it work?

...but not the other way...You can go from "N" to "D" without pushing the button, but, you need to push the button to go from "D" to "2" to "1"...assuming someone hasn't removed that safety feature.

Re: adding switches to console....I was going to put the remote trunk release button in place of the cig. lighter in the console, but chickened out on the remote release all together.

You could file square notches into the shifters gate so pushing the button is required. Slight saw tooth like angles on gate and paw would create resistance in steps so pushing the shifter would draw the button down. You would need to practice the push it.
