Hey all,

I just finished swapping an automatic for a freshly rebuilt aluminum case A833OD into my 1969 Barracuda, and while it works great, it has started to leak gear oil from the bottom of the case where the reverse gear shift rod attaches. I’ve read that this is a common A833 problem (possible I overfilled it) and that on the original iron case 4-speeds it’s a real pain to get to the o-ring, but also that it might be significantly easier on a newer aluminum and that it can be done with the transmission in the car. Is that true, or should I prepare myself to pull it back out and disassemble it? For reference, the transmission came out of an early eighties Volare and I filled it with the PennGrade 80W90 that Brewer’s recommended.

No you can't do that in the car. The reverse idler shaft needs to be pressed out of the case to get the pivot shaft out to change the o-ring. That's why the reverse o-ring never gets changed, too much time. and now with the aging they all seem to leak there.

Bummer! I figured that was the case but I wanted to be sure. Thank you.

Make sure it isn't the side cover that is the real leak. The OD cases have a different side cover gasket and if memory serves it is in that general area that it will leak with the wrong gasket. Just an idea.

For sure! I put it up on a lift and cleaned it up real well and it unfortunately does look to be the reverse o-ring, but thank you.
