Rani started the thread on Lada cars, and I read a bit on the internet, as well as the much hated Yugo.

WHERE DOES FIAT get all the money to buy up everybody else??

    And backed by the ..........FRENCH??

    Lada - Wikipedia

Lada (Cyrillic: Лада, recently stylized as LADA) is a brand of cars manufactured by AvtoVAZ (originally VAZ), a Russian company owned by the French Groupe Renault.[1] The first cars manufactured by AvtoVAZ, with technical assistance from Fiat, were marketed under the Zhiguli brand, allegedly chosen after it was suggested by the designer, A. M. Cherny.[2] When the cars began to be exported on foreign markets, the Zhiguli brand was found to be inappropriate, as it was hard to pronounce for non-Russian speakers, and it was said to resemble the word gigolo too closely.[2]

Fiat used to be propped up by their government, socialists, Remember Adolf`s ally.
Not sure if they still do.

I'm not sure of the political reasons why they were built but now a days if you have a lada classic or an original fiat 500 and roll up to a rave in it, there are not many words to describe how cool you'd be.

It's not just me saying, those cars are becoming a pop icon fast, and only few can find and get one before the prices get going to be unreachable.

Fiat's and Renault's are all over the place in Europe and in the Mediterranean region.
Before the Earth caught on fire and went stupid, I would try to rent a Dacia Duster whenever I went to that region.
It's a Czech built Renault, but seemed reliable enough.
For some reason, Jeeps are super popular in the Med.

Geez, you couldn't pay someone to take away a Lada in the 90's. What's next, the Hyundai Pony going to be a high dollar collector car? Or a mid 80's Skoda? OMFG

I drove a very new at the time Renault duster in India (they are badged as Renault in that market) back in 2018. They are quiet and comfortable and feel very solid. The one i drive was pretty much brand new at the time so it will be interesting if they age gracefully.

      FIAT: Failure In Automotive Technology.

Sis had a Fiat 850 Spider: Cute bug eye like sportster, wooden dash was only thing that was not rusting. Drop a Toyota motor in it and cruise. Caught fire weeks after she sold it.

I have no idea how well the hold up. I know that there are a lot of them on the road over there.
Like you, I had a newer model with low miles.

          Maybe.
But since 2014, Chrysler belongs to Fiat S.p.A group.
As do Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, Abarth, Jeep, Chrysler, Mopar, Dodge, Ram trucks.

The good old days when Chrysler belonged to "the big three" is far behind
The dwarf knocked down the giant.

          Bonjour Princess Valiant
          Très bon français

After the end of WW2, Italy was destroyed and ruined. Fiat, until the eighties, produced hundreds of thousands (millions?) of low-end cars for humble people and workers. Soviets, in the same optic, bought assembly lines from Fiat until 1989 (Lada).
They were cheap, non performing and uncomfortable, often rusty but solid cars.
They lasted long and were very popular, even in others european countries.

Little by little, Fiat bought nearly all other italian car manufacturers, including Ferrari for two years (2014-2016)
And also, the american giant, Chrysler.

Nowadays, things have changed and Fiat produce nice cars.
