Alter cam timing

I have a replacement timing chain set that has a slot in the top gear for the dowel on the cam.
My cam card states to centerline at 104. It is dialing in at 110.
What would I use to offset the cam timing? And where do I find it?

Offset dowel pins on the cam sprocket, unless you are using the Roll Master / JP timing chain.
 
The cam gears with the slot are nearly impossible to change timing with. Your best recourse is using a timing set with the multi keyed crank gear or a cam gear without the slot (so you can use the offset bushing kits.

You guys inspired me to find a better set.
Ordered a comp cams set that has 3 positions and jus want to get it close.
I didn’t know there were other options out there, until I started looking with your suggestions.

You can file and shim the groove in cam gear.
Calculations need to be made and figure out to which direction.
Generic cast cam gears are not recommended on performance use.
They may break.
What is the comp gears part number you are referring to?

3 positions has 0, 4 advanced and 4 retarded. At 4 advanced, you'll still be 2 degrees retarded. I'd send it back and get a JP/Rollmaster set. They are billet double roller and have nine keyways on the crank sprocket. You'll need to check it again regardless of which timing set you use, because they are likely not all made the same.

I don't know if the JP Rollmaster still has a problem with the crank gear. They fit really tight (some need to be honed). Also you need to check it the center line of the cam sprocket and centerline of the crank sprocket are lined up. Sever people I know had to machine meterial off the rear cof the crank sprocket to get the centerlines in line.

My last one fit very nicely. I had one that fit like you describe, though, so I'd mic the crank snout and the ID of the sprocket first. Thanks for the reminder.
 
When I ordered one of those chains about three years ago, I had to hone the cam sprocket.
 
RollMaster was originally made in Qld, Australia. The owner Bob sold out many years to JP who are in Sth Aust. JP were making t/chain sets at the same as RM before the take over. All the RM sets came Iwis chain. JP used Rolon chain, made in India....
