What is a good way to clean the raw metal (not aluminum) alternator housing without hurting the internals?

I've tried Scotchbrite, Neverdull, etc.....

A very fine 4" wire wheel on a drill works to help remove corrosion and polish it up. WD-40 and a terry cloth towel by hand at the end has a nice polishing effect to it too.

Repainted the center steel strip black with a small paint brush, after cleaning it up with a small stainless steel wire brush and final clean with brake parts cleaner to remove any oil before painting.

This one was done a year ago, this is how it looks today.

Looks very good.
Ive been using the Dremmel with little brass wire wheels on oxidixed parts, but them damn things break apart if you run them hard. Wear eye protection!

Those look like good options.
Previous discussion on this topic didn't seem very conclusive.
Maybe soda blasting would be OK but that requires complete removal of the guts.
Cleaning an Alternator

Be careful with brake parts cleaner. It can disolves the coating on the windings in the alt and allow them to short together.

If your going to disassemble, I wonder how dipping the cases in a bucket of Evaporust would look?
Anybody try that?

Yeah. Havent tried the round scuff pads yet, but the seem a bit too soft.

A vendor at Chrysler Nats in Carlisle PA had tons of them, only a buck a piece.
