Who rebuilds alternators ?
Or should I say restores them?
Like really correct restored?
I think Dixie and one or two other folks.
There's some informative posts in moparts restoration forum.

Round back for a 69 Cuda
It works but when I was a kid in 1985 I painted it black. It’s the original one for the car

That's cool.
I asked because the later style (squareback) is easy to remove the stator and diodes.
The one you have is not. The connections are soldered and the diodes pressed in.

So the choice is either desolder/cut and remove or come up with a way to remove the paint without removing the insulation on the stator windings, etc.

As you may know, regular shops usually media blast the cases. They never look truly original after that. Sometiems its so harsh the casting date and stamped numbers are blasted away. :(
Some nice pics of '69 in this thread.

While you have it off the car. Check the brushes. They're easy to remove and cheap to replace if worn.

If you have the patience, that may be the best way.

If you seperate the halves, the pulley side of the housing doesn't have anything fragile.
It's the just the back half.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the reddish orange insulation for the windings sold in spray cans. Probably from one of the mail-order parts places like ASP wholesale.
Alternator repair, a little show and tell.

To gently blast the case, try soda blasting. You can do it on the cheap too with a small hand-held media blast gun (Harbor Freight, for example) and some blasting soda. It will only take of paint, dirt, etc., and it's water soluble for easy clean-up.

Nice thanks for the info. That will probably work perfect

Oven cleaner will eat paint off. Not sure if it's safe on aluminum. Maybe try on junk aluminum part and see how it reacts.
