So I won't say cause I had to research it to find the answer. I never knew that. What's more surprising is the transmission that was used behind it.

AMC had good engines, too. There was no need to import crap.

well, it was the 2.0. little doubt they were going to cast the 401.

      engineappchart.jpg

Many strange motor combos out there. VW made some motors for the Dodge Omni. A BMW was supposed to get the Mopar 2.5, but they quickly cancelled that when the word got out. Heck, even International Harvester cast a few thousand 318 blocks. Yamaha cast the heads of the Ford SHO 6 cyl. Maserati/Cosworth cast the head for the TC/Mopar 2.2 turbo...

I had a 2004 mini cooper that had a Chrysler engine. It had the horrible CVT transmission which was made by ZF who used to make performance transmissions for the ford GT40 and the like, sad they came out with such a bad transmission nowadays.

I believe that Mercury Outboards cast the first aluminum blocks for the ZL1 Corvette

The AMC Pacer (or fishbowl as we call it) was designed to use the Wenkle Rotary engine but don't think it ever went into production. AMC was way ahead of it's time in some instances and they made some fast cars.

Not bad considering a roof fell down on it a number of years ago and bent the rood down. I cut the glass out of it which didn't get broken funnily enough and he put a new roof and 1/4 on it. He did a rotisserie on it and took it to a big AMC meet in Kenosha and won first prize with it.

Maybe the new ones, but the ZL1s of the 60s were cast by the Winters foundry that cast all the rest of the HP aluminum pieces for Chevy back then.

Ah, maybe the Ger-MINI did get the Chrysler engine I read about? ZF or any CV trans....oy vey! The CV Justy almost bankrupted Subaru. Why not just run a gas motor at the most efficient speed to turn a generator and power the car with electric motors? like a Diesel electric train? To inefficient?

Chrysler looked into that in the early 2000's,but their chronic money problems put an end to it.

I can say first hand that a showroom stock 1973 Dart 340 Sport auto/air can eat a 1973 AMX 360 4-gear. by 4 cars plus...
My friend hated that, the next race I had was with a 396/325 Nova auto. he raced behind me... WTF...lol. That Nova was the closest I ever had with the 340 Sport.

Next up was a 1973 Camaro SS 350 4speed, beat him by 2 1/2 cars. He was unpleasantly surprised...lol

The AMX was behind me for that one too ... we were nuts.

My sisters boyfriend had a 390 4sp Javelin (69/70?) the one with the roof spoiler in orange and same wheels as the AMX shown above. I drove it once ... That car WAS FAST.

According to a documentary on AMC (it's available on Youtube), AMC contracted GM to provide the rotary engines. At the eleventh hour, GM said , 'sorry, we don't have any engines for you'. I doubt they ever planned to supply one of their competitors with engines. But, anyway, with cars actually rolling down the assembly line, AMC personnel frantically shoehorned the straight six into the Pacer. If I recall correctly, you have to unbolt the engine to remove the valve cover on the six because it's blocked by the cowl.
One redeeming feature of the Pacer was that you could make a complete 6 foot long sub sandwich in the backseat.

A neighbor of mine, when I was younger, collected cars. He had a 69 AMX, 390 , 4 speed. dark metallic green. Beautiful condition. A friend wanted to buy the car. The asking price back then wasn't that much. Neighbor said the car was quick and hot ride. He wouldn't sell it to anyone under age 35. So, no sale. Some time later, the car was sold to an older fella. That guy wrapped the car around a tree.

I saw a Javelin sitting here in Missouri and had to swing around and take a picture. I know exactly where it's at if there are interested parties ;-)
