Total rebuild on 70 340. Do dyno pulls on engine satisfy engine break-in requirements? Oil was changed after dyno testing but again with Joe Gibbs engine break in oil. This oil is scheduled to be changed after 500 miles. Is this considered excessive?

Thanks for taking time to respond. A person can read just so much and be totally confused. So many opinions out there.

A good dyno operator will run a break on cycle on the engine long before making any “pulls”. It’s actually the most controlled way to break an engine in. After it comes off the dyno, I consider it broken in.

That's the understanding I was getting reading between the lines. It's either the dyno or 500-1000 mile run but not both. Hope this is correct.

I’ve never done the 500-1000 mile malarkey. That’s written in auto manufacturers manuals and stuff but it makes no sense to me at all. If it’s a flat tappet, once the cam is broken in, load the engine a few times, heat cycle it a few times, then beat it like a red headed step child. If it’s a roller cam, fire it off, run a few heat cycles then do the same, beat on it like you will for the rest of its life. There’s no reason to “drive it easy” for 500-1000 miles.

I'm running mine until I get the carb fully tuned with my Innovate air/fuel O2 meter so much less than 500 miles. So far it has engine break time (flat tappet cam) and about 20 test miles. Hopefully the filter and magnet do their jobs in the meantime before I waste the oil. If I was going to dump the oil right after dyno/break-in I would feel like I would have to do another change in short order before running it for the summer but that is just me.
