Just got back home from two weeks on the road. Went up to Napa, California for my aunts memorial. We planned a trip back east but with the passing of my aunt we decided to take on an extra week and head down the California coast.

First night we stayed in Barstow, California. Lots of fires in the mountains

We decided to stop at Travis AFB to get some fuel and ice. Kinda cruised around and got these.

The C141 was the first aircraft delivered to the AF. Had over 10,000 hours of flying time

We meandered down the 101 on Sunday heading for Pismo Beach. We wanted to do the 1 but as some of you know part of it fell into the Pacific Ocean.

Monday morning we got up and headed up the 1 to Hearst Castle. Lots of tourist, absolutely no manners, pushing and shoving, cutting in line. Oh well, took the bus up to the mansion. Very expensive tour. Actually they have three tours to chose from. The bus ride took us from the nice 65 degree ocean breeze up 85 degrees, 1600 feet overlooking the Pacific.

William Randolf Hearst had all his land fenced off where he kept wild animals from all over the world. The big horn sheep are European versions of our big horns. He even had lions and a polar bears. Those enclosures are up at the mansion and are empty. He donated them to the SF Zoo.

I make it a point to visit any Moparts or FABO members in the area I'm visiting. On Tuesday morning I visited the shop run by junior340(Andy). You won't meet a nicer guy. We've talked for years and while at Springfling this year we met for the first time. Has a real nice shop with several projects going Tuesday of last week. While I was there his neighbor stopped by and gave me a tour of his Mopar collection which is nice. In the interest of security he didn't want any pictures taken. Here's some of junior340's junk.

Latter that day we took a drive down Hwy 1 toward Lompoc. Since I needed gas we decided to check out Vandenburg AFB. This base is where they rain the nuclear missile crews as well as launching satellites into space. I didn't realize how big the place is. I found out they had a museum on the base so we went seeking that out.

Well, this venture turned out to be an adventure. We followed the signs which took us out toward the launch areas. We passed several buildings, one of which had 3 rows of fence with the first row electrified. Signs of "Deadly Force Authorized" plastered all along the fence. Needless to say we didn't hang around.

Well, once we got down to the launch gantrys I realized that maybe we had done too far. I was amazed that we didn't hit any security posts. Well, we decided that we had gone far enough and turned around. As it turned out we missed a launch just two days before we got there.

Sorry for no pictures of the gantry area. There were signs plastered all over "Photography Prohibited" If we were pulled over I didn't want our phone confiscated.

I did take a few of the entrance to the base.

As a note, some of the security police were running around on 4 wheelers. What a cool job. I did see a lot of security police on the base, they were all in the BX.

On the same day we stopped in Orcutt, CA. Since my wife's maiden name is Orcutt she went buck nutty taking pictures. Of course I had to get one of the resident muscle car.

On Wednesday we hung around Pismo. Fog rolled in and the temps dropped so hitting the beach was iffy. We did hit the boardwalk. The pup sitting there had pups that hit seven weeks. The guy was selling the pups for $2500 each.

Headed home on Thursday with a stop in Barstow on Thursday evening. Buch of Army vehicles rolling in all heading toward the NTC

We did make a stop in Tehachapi, CA. This suppose to be the train capital with trains rolling through every 20 minutes. They make the long climb up the mountain from Bakersfield and down into the Mohave desert.

We thought about stopping at Edwards AFB but was running short of time. Maybe next time.

Not many of those around anymore especially convertibles. Most have been converted over to low riders and hoppers.
