Barrett Jackson has its place in the world, but it is not in the real world! To me it's the same with most products!! You can buy art, and hang it on your wall, and you can also buy art from the Louvre and hang that on your wall as well! Both are art, only one is collectible, and affordable to the deep pockets! Same with guitars, I can play a $10 pawn shop guitar and make it sound good, but I own a Martin because it sounds great!
Where the confusion comes into play is when somebody sees their car on an auction show and thinks their car is worth what the car on TV is worth! And yes, clones are also ruining the hobby! Just because you spend $25k on a Satellite doesn't make it worth what a Roadrunner would fetch!! Dollars to dollars, yes, you spend the exact same to restore each car, but only one has a pedigree!! These cars are not an investment, except at the highest level, and that's not where we play here! If I have a 68 Dart and so does my neighbor, but mine is an original Hemi car and his is a /6, who should put $25k into their car?? So, just because the guy with the /6 puts $25k into his car, does that make it worth $25k?? We all know the answer to that, but we are in the hobby and are armed with knowledge! The guy who sees his dream car on TV might not!!
Yes, B-J exposes the public to these cars, but at an unrealistic level, and it takes a smart, and informed buyer to know that! I for one would research any car I bought no matter where it was being sold, not so with buyers who buy with their hearts, or deep wallets!
