    Elgin camshaft

Am looking for intake Valve closing ABDC:

I am trying to calculate for compression for this E-578-S camshaft I purchased years ago.
    With 1.5 rockers
    Intake .429” valve lift 209 @ .050”

    Exhaust.444” Vlv lift, 220 @ .050”
I believe the website says 112 LSA Intake, 116LSA exhaust

    some number: 2899206

the plan was H116 Speed Pro pistons on J cylinderheads,
    Block and heads not milled.

Daily driver 360, 2.94 or 3.21 geared axle, 4K pound car.

I think this close to the 340 automatic camshaft.

    Sounds like their 340 cam.

I meant to tell you when you called earlier....but we got off on so many tangents......I don't believe you'll find what you're looking for. I could be wrong....but here's why I say that. Elgin, Melling, TRW, and "all those" type cams that parts stores used to carry like that back in the day didn't come with cam cards like we know them now. THey still don't if you find one. The basic specs, lift, duration, LSA and "all that" are printed on the box. And that's "all you get". At least that's all I've ever seen. Like I told you, "most likely" you're going to have to find that with a degree wheel.

That's the pro stock stuff . The valves are okay too. Not the lightest though, but is small diff.
          Only rough specs...

One web page says generically ABDC is between 50 and 60 degrees, which gives me a good idea.

John, I have some good news, maybe. If you can find the box.....or a box for that same cam, all the specs should be on the box. I went and got the box the cam came in that I put in the 400 and all the specs are on the box.

Here's my cam card that closely resembles the specs given in the 1st post. It's from Erson though.

If the intake centerline is 112°, then the intake open at .050" would be:

                            112 - (209/2) = 112 - 104.5 = 7.5° after TDC = Intake open @.050"

                            Intake close would be:

                            112 + (209/2) = 112 + 104.5 = 216.5°

                            Now subtract 180 from 216.5:

                            216.5 - 180 = 36.5° ABDC = Intake closed @.050"

                            Now the exhaust:

If the exhaust centerline is 116°, then the exhaust open will be:

                            116 + (220/2) = 116 + 110 = 226°

Now subtract 180 from 226 and you get:

                            226 - 180 = 46° BBDC = exhaust open @.050"

                            Exhaust close will be:

                            116 - (220/2) = 116 - 110 = 6° BTDC = Exhaust close @.050"

                            Lobe separation will be:

                            (112 + 116) / 2 = 228 / 2 = 114° = Lobe sep

                            * this all assumes that the information for intake centerline and exhaust centerline are what you posted....

All of elgins cam specs are online, Elgin industries go to specs, iirc there are like 90 pages of just camshaft specs.

You can calculate the valve open and closes if you have the duration specs and get either:

Intake lobe centerline, and lobe separation
Intake lobe centerline, and exhaust lobe centerline

The info in the picture from the catalog shows the advertised duration as 279* on the intake lobe.
279* advertised, with an installed C/L of 112* would have the intake opening at 27.5* btdc, and closing at 71.5* abdc.

No, you can. I'm way too lazy for all that. That's above my pay grade.

I made a spreadsheet back around 2005 of the available cams, their specs for mopars... I calculated the specs forward and backward and caught some errors that were on the manufacturer's specs, then I figured out what they should be and corrected them on my spreadsheet...

I had more accurate specs on the cams than the manufacturers had posted....

That way I could make more accurate comparisons between various camshafts...

Yeah? My Uncle's a world renowned economist. He does economic forecasts as a hobby. Like I said, "all that's" above my pay grade. I like to just idle along in neutral for the most part. lol
