Anybody know about 2 1/4" rear brakes on 67 Dart

I recently bought a 67 Dart Gt and is supposed to be mostly original.
It has the 273 Commando with Auto transmission and a 8 3/4" rear-end
posi-trac with 3.23s. The car had been sitting around for 7 years and brakes
weren't working so I'm in process of redoing brakes. It has 10" drums all the
way around. The front shoes are 2 1/4" x 10" like it's supposed to but on the rear it also has 2/14" x 10" -- all the parts places say the rear shoes are supposed to be 1 3/4" x 10". I don't see any car with 2 1/4" shoes on the
back -- anybody out there ever seen this before? Should I put 1 3/4" on it
or maybe buy a set of front 2 1/4" shoes and try them???

do the drums work now? just need new linings? 73 & up darts used a wider rear shoe part #445-- there has been discussion on this topic--- the main thing is that the backing plate matches the drum. Lawrence

Just need new linings, everything looks fine except the 2 1/4" width. Thanks for the info, just looked up a 73 and 75 Dart and they use 10x2 1/2" on rear. I can't find any car that uses 2 1/4" shoes on rear - measured it quite a few times and this is supposed to have original rear end in it.

did you get a pair of the 2.5" shoes-- i bet they measure 2.25---

No, haven't tried that because have to order brakes, just can't go to store and look at them. They measure the same as the fronts which are supposed to be 2 1/4" and they are. Going to take off the front drum again and relook.

I would check with a local brake supply shop and see if they will/can reline your current set of shoes. Bring them both sets to reline AND the drums to turn. That way they could "re-arch" the shoes to correctly fit each drum so you can get the best braking from them.

FWIW, I have the 73+10 by2.5 brakes on my Cuda. I use 99 Dakota shoes. The only difference is the e-brake arm, you will need the Dakota arm. This makes the shoes a store stock item.
