Someone in one of the threads sent me down this rabbit trail. Ive looked into the 545RFE tranny and it looks apealing as far as gearing goes and strength seems not to be a problem. Has anybody done this swap and what other than structural issues needs to be done to control it.

i don't think there is any after market controllers available for it, so unless you are going to swap the motor it came behind with it i think you are out of luck...i need to call my trans guy today, i will ask him...i just got off the phone with him. as far as he knows there is no aftermarket controllers for it, but he has never had any one ask about it....so another words he had no idea...just checked the 3 companies that i know of that make stand alone trans controllers, power train specialists, baumann and tci and there is no listing for a conrtroller.....

Inkjunkie is right about the controller. They are fully computer controlled. That and the fact they are HUGE I doubt you could put one in without major floor surgery. Not worth it IMO.

Is that a 4spd auto overdrive tranny? I get lost in the numbers since I haven't kept up.

It's a 5 spd. The first version was called a 45 RFE and was rated a 4 spd. (although it does have a 5th gear used for hwy passing). Then they made it a 5 spd and called it a 545 RFE.

Thanks Fishy. What did they come in and when did they start making them?

If I'm not mistaken they used them specifically behind 3.7 and 4.7 engines in Rams' and Dakota's. Maybe even the Hemi but I'm not sure on that. They came out in 99 or 2000 if I remember right. My 02 Dakota has one and it seems to work real nice. It has the 4.7 engine and with just the programmer it gets a little second gear bark. Nice firm shifts but not super aggressive. One other nice thing is they have a real low 1st gear. I don't remember the exact ratio but it's somewhere around 3 to 1.

That would be an awesome swap if they made a controller. I have one in my dakota and it always seems to have the right gear for the hills around here.

I found the controller at "Powertrain Control Solutions" their price $750
If they will sell directly to me.Denny @ Sharadon Performance thinks I need a stage two build with tougher bands and clutches to handle the 550 ft/lbs torque.
    Thoughts on that?

    1st 3.00 : 1 2nd 1.67 : 1
    2nd Prime 1.50 : 1 3rd 1.00 : 1 4th 0.75 : 1 5th 0.67 : 1 Reverse 3.00 : 1

The tranny has an interesting set of gears which seem like they would work well on a road course with a paddle shifter.
more research to come. By the way cutting the floor is happening regardless, Im raising the drivetrain 2" for clearance anyway.

I spoke to Dan at Powertrain control solutions and they have now successfully programed a couple of controllers for the 545RFE but I could use everyones help in generating interest in them really getting the controller as a regular item in their catalog.
If you would just drop them an Email and ask about one.
