Are Walmart Mopar oil filters good?

-
I buy the cheapest oil filter I can find (locally) for my box truck. Cheapest so far, $25, each. Fourteen quarts per oil change is bad enough.

Edit: genuine Motorcraft oil filter lists for $62!! (For a cartridge filter, not even a spin-on!

I learned early on about fram. Been using bosch, mobil 1, mopar for my old cars ever since..

Had a fram dbl gaurd one lose it inerds and were hanging with my slant hv oil pump decades ago Quit using them after that.

The cases of long WIX and Med length WIX I bought last Fall... all Made in the USA. Still had a leaker on the Wife's 67 x 383 Formula S.

WalMart has such a huge amount of buying power that they can tell manufacturers how they want products made. I know that the tires they sell are not the same tires you can buy elsewhere. They are cheaper runs of similar tires available in their manufactirers vendors elsewhere. You cannot get the "WalMart" versions anywhere else. For example, the Good Wrangler tire you get from WalMart is not the same Goodyear Wrangler tire you get from a Goodyear store, or a bonafide Goodyear dealer. I don't know if that holds true to oil filters and other items or not, but I hold it suspect.

This x ”a million”.

Even brand names at Walmart may not be equivalent to the same brand name bought somewhere else, there are many cases of this across various brands and items.

That and Mopar will put their brand name on anything if you pay them enough money, it does not mean better quality by itself.

I wouldn’t trust a “Mopar” brand filter to be better. And I certainly wouldn’t expect a Walmart Mopar filter to even be equivalent to another Mopar filter. You’re gonna have to cut them open and compare if you really want to have any idea.

Well, since my filters for my box are cartridges, I'm gonna look at both the Motorcraft and the fram, at walmart. Kinda hard to hide construction details when there's no can around the guts.

I've used Purolator, Motorcraft, Fram for years without issues. I've read complaints on here about Fram, I can't say either way since it's been a while since I've used fram

i've used plenty of motorcraft, fram and wix here in the uk for decades and had no issues with any. used them on cars, vans and big trucks too.
neil.

Sure, but as you pointed out the UK and EU have their own standards, so even using the same brand and possibly even the same brand and part number between the UK and the US might be comparing parts with different construction. You’d have to be sure that you’re comparing apples to apples, some probably are the same but some might not be.

Fram sold a lot of filters with there catch phrases.. Regardless I'd never use 1 present day, and haven't in over 20 years.

I don't know. I feel like we are splitting hairs here. Who didn't run the Fram Ph8a in their Muscle Car. For years and years. Never seen one fail, and technology has only gotten better. Only thing I have ever seen is a gasket shift out of place because it most likely was not lubricated properly

yeah but... i always bought a few ph8a's from walmart when i was on vacation in florida. they were much cheaper than here in the uk, lol.
i know what you meant though, i'm just joshing with you (not about buying in walmart though) :poke:
neil.

See if you can find Baldwin, Hastings, Purolator. Not sure what else, perhaps Motorcraft (Ford)

just like john deere and the like at lowes and home depot. cheap junk compared to what you get at a dealer..

It should say on the box where it's made.

it does not.

they say: see product for country of origin

or at least most of them do. some don't say anything at all. some say mann-hummel.

there is no consistency in the packaging, currently.

It should say on the box where it's made. I honestly don't know what is 100% made in the usa

Funny that this came up. Last weekend I changed the oil in my 2018 Ram with a Mopar filter from walmart. On start up one of the lifters started clattering loud (hemi tick?) and I noticed the oil pressure was at like 39. I did some research and someone mentioned the same problem with a Mopar filter. I switched it to a Wix and the startup oil pressure was much higher and the tick wasn't as bad. It goes away after about 30 seconds and the engine isn't throwing any codes. It has steadily gotten better, so I am beginning to think the filter was the culprit

Wix is making filters all over the world. Depends on the number where it's made.
I thought this was the case too, but I guess not. Last week, I bought a filter for my pickup from the local O'reilly's.

I bought a few more today to stock on the shelf.

In fact, the box has an interesting line on it too.

exactly. i have an entire parts room full of wix and napa filters and they're from all over the place: usa, germany, china, mexio, thailand

i'd 100% run a wix or napa gold made in china filter on anything i own. it's made to their spec and i know it's better than a fram.
I used to run all Wix, til they got bought out.
Cut one apart, you'll see.
Wix is now crap and you will get burned.

forgive me for not taking your advice, but i'd not trust your opinion on much.

also, if wix is good enough for the $400,000 machines i work on it's certainly good enough for our crappy old V8's

i personally don't care where its made

i buy baldwin filters from UK baldwin distributor some of which are made in a UK factory with a contract to make filters for baldwin and some come from mexico and the US

the spec for a B2 filter seems to be the same the world over.... and i buy them because they make the specification available and its damn easy to find.
baldwin also used to make motorcraft filters i don't know if they still do

I would happily use a wix but they cost more here due to being imported piecemeal by US car parts suppliers

PH8A style filters used on lots of european japanese and US cars so OEM equivalents are also available volvo 740, ford explorer, toyota landcruiser and Hilux. there is a vehicle warranty or service warranty dependent on an OEM filter so i regard them as decent quality. this may be poor judgement on my part but can't say i have had a detrimental outcome with a toyota motorcraft or volvo filter.

Followup.
Since my filters for my box are cartridges, I found both a Motorcraft and a fram at Walmart (no other brand available. )
I could easily have swapped filters into the other brands box, nobody could tell the difference. Filter color, pleats, construction materials.... identical.

Genuine Motorcraft, $34.22. Fram, $19.98. I would probably buy a Walmart house brand.... if they offered one!
