Is ATF+4 safe to use in my 1973 904 transmission?

Yes it is

Imagine ATF-4 as the Mobile 1 of trans fluid: 100 synthetic (marketing as it may be mineral based but so refined that it is now considered synthetic) with higher boiling temp and less sludge potential. It also has more detergents in it and may cause leaks in an older system simply due to the fact that it can clean out buildup that was previously stopping the leaks of the older trans.

ATF+4 is used as an update on all Chrysler transmission’s your good to go !

That's what I use in my 94 Ram 2500 TCD.
