I’m contemplating trying something I haven’t done before and looking for some input.

I need some air cleaner clearance (hood scoop). I have a stock steel hood and picked up a Goodmark 2 ½” steel cowl induction scoop (not my favorite either, but everything else I looked at in steel or fiberglass was just a bit too short for the air cleaner I’ll be using).

The has a hood scoop has a ½” flange around the perimeter. After looking at different methods of attaching it I’m kind of leaning towards flanging the perimeter of the hood so the flange of the scoop will lay pretty much flush (or a little recessed) on the hood. For actual attachment I’m contemplating spot welding the perimeter of the scoop. After it’s spot welded I figure I should be able to skim it with filler.

I’m not a body guy so I’m looking for any input on this.

Filler applied over a flange that's only spot welded will crack. You need to weld it completely. In very short bursts , cooling it with an air blower or you will warp the crap out of it.

Steel scoop on a steel hood?
Flanging the hood and spot welding the scoop on sounds great- but don't use filler. Use lead on it.

I mounted an old school scoop, which was some kind of hard plastic, with a similar flange from underneath.

No need to fill the seam as it just looked like it belonged.
