Thanks!!!!! I just pulled my axles and center section,8 3/4 A-body--I have the green bearing set-up. I had a little gear lube between the axle retainer and the axle seal is this normal???? Should there be none?? or does a little migrate out?? I did not have any leaking into my brake assembly at all--So am I go to go or should I change the seals out--Steve

I get kinda paranoid about stuff like that so I would change the seals for my own piece of mind. Others might say run as is.

I'd change them too cause there should be none leaking past the seal. Put a light coat of grease on the new seals too so the axle slides in without hurting it.

Yep for what they cost put new ones in, also before putting them in, put some white lithium grease on the backside of them on the little spring. That spring could pop off when installing them with a hammer....grease helps hold the spring there.

Yep just had the same thing on the wifes Dart driver side so changed both sides just to be sure.:glasses7:

Measure the depth of the bearing & retainer on the axle . Note that, then drive the seal into the axle housing to that depth.

There is no stop in the housing. If you drive the seal in to deep it will go beyond the machined surface on the axle shaft and you will have a leak.

Yep I have a stop in my tubes,Just ordered new seals,Thanks for all the tip's guy's,It probably was just oil from pulling the axles out but,I do not want any problems so I'll change them out--Thanks Steve

Not positive, but I think the oil seal is more for splash protection. I don't think the axle oil level is supposed to sit at the level of the seal. Hopefully you get enough splash and oil from cornering to keep the seal lubricated. I once got a leak in my dumber years after I added some gear oil "to be safe" and didn't have a manual to know how to check the level. I recall the seals in my 65 Newport (8-3/4" rear) were leather, and still looked OK after decades.
