I posted this on bigblockdart the other day and haven't had any response so I figured I would try my luck here.

I have access to a 1968 a-833 with a matching big block bellhousing. This is the unit with only one shift pad location ahead of the crossmember. This is a 23 spline 4.80" IBR unit that is complete from the shifter to the flywheel. Is there any chance of using this in an a-body? I haven't been able to find much on using this set-up.

Thanks,
Zack

Anything can be done, but you will create more problems than you will fix. If you can buy the parts for a good price fine, but sell or trade them for the correct parts. You'll thank me later.

You can buy that stuff for your sweet deal & eather sell, trade for the correct a body stuff. Or just get an a-body 67 & up extension housing & main shaft swao that over & good to go. Make sure i its non over drive though.

You'll have a few options if you have your heart set on that transmission, to install "as is" you'll have to hack the living daylights out of the trans cross member and you'll wind up with the shifter handle somewhere up in the ash tray, the shifter mechanism and the cross member will be trying to occupy the same space.

Another option to use the transmission "as is" you'll have to fab a bracket to mount the shifter in the A body location, this will still require some hacking at the tranny cross member as the fabbed mounting bracket and the cross member will be trying to occupy the same space, but the shifter will be in a usable location.

Yet another option is to change the tail shaft on that tranny to the later B/E body style and then fab a bracket to mount the shifter in the A body location but that will either require a big dent in the cross member to clear the forward shifter mounting bosses or partial removal of the bosses for clearance.

The easiest thing to do is pass on that transmission and find an A body unit, this will simply bolt in

Ok I did this swap
I mean I put a long shaft tranny into my 68 Barracuda.
Daliant got everything right.
I had to grind off most of the top forward-most mounting lug, just for clearance to the top brace, in the tunnel That whole entire area would have to be reworked to even bolt on a plate.
Fortunately my extension came with the rear mount as well, and I used it to put the shifter up very high, and in just in front of the buckets. Awesome!!
So the answer is; the long shaft tranny is awesome in an A, waaay better than the other, and I highly recommend it. But,you HAVE to have the rear mounting pad, and I don't think you can ever get the shifter into the stock location. Close is as good as it gets.
And you would have to build your own shift-rods which is a good thing, cuz the stock rods are way too flexible. I used some seamless tubing that was sized to accept the cut off ends, and plug-welded them in.I raised the shifter high enough that the top mounting bolt is above the floor. My stick is only about 8 to 10 inches long.

You need a 70' and up b/e tail shaft as it has the rear most mounting point that can use an adapter to put the shifter in the a body location.

I have a one of those adapters for a B/E transmission already fabbed up. Using the B mount is not a great idea because the upper mounting bosses interfere with the torsion bar crossmember. Find someone that would be interested in swapping the B only tailshaft for a B/E tailshaft and you are good to go with an adapter plate. They work very well.

That is exactly what I'm using, got it from crackedback!

I am doing a install of a A833 into a 72 Dart small block. Using the long tail, 2 position shift brackets. I have it all installed except the shifter. I have the bracket and everything. I just Have to open the hole up on the floor hump for the shifter to come through. a little time and a lot of contemplating and you'll make it work.
if your interested see my thread
A833 4 speed transmission slant six swap into 318 340 360 small block

I did it in 2003
When I mentioned it here I did not get great feedback... now I hear echoes of my experience from the same people, strange, and encouragment too..
The other day I googled some heads... and came back with results of my own heads...pics stolen and claimed as there own on another site. You see darnedest things sometimes. People imitating is the highest form of flattery they say..

If it’s only got one shift pad and it’s before the crossmember that’s an a body trans As far as I’ve ever seen. Usually the body and the body in eBuddy have two pads one before and one after
