Have you ever been approached to sell your car, that doesn't have a for sale sign on it, and you tell the person you would be willing to listen to a reasonable offer and the person says to you, HOW MUCH YOU WANT!
My standard response is I don't know, make me an offer that's reasonable and we can go from there. These people just cannot come out with a price, so they badger you to no ends about how much you want for it! I have a tendency to not be very friendly when the badgering keeps going on. My end all discussion response after all this badgering is put a price on the item that is so far overpriced, I should be locked up!
Is this a common negotiating tactic? just ignorance? just kicking tires? or I'm old and cranky!
My view is, if your going to ask, you should have an idea of what you are willing to offer. I can politely say no thank-you instead of telling you to,,,,,,, after your badgering!

if it bothers ya so much, instead of saying make me an offer pull some stupid high price out of your ass for him.

he isn't gonna make an offer because he doesn't want to offer higher then what you may say.

you are causing half the problem by even playing with that type in the first place.

I think that often people have no idea what the car is worth, they just see a really cool car and wonder if there is any way they could afford something like that, so just give them a price that would make YOU happy, like the insured value, that should satisfy there curiosity, and if they are really serious about buying it then they can make a counter offer

As a matter of fact, that happened to me at Nationals last week.
I told the guy the car wasn't for sale and he insisted on hearing a price. So I gave him one. My price was so ridiculously high it was unreal. When he said I was nuts, I reminded him that the car wasn't for sale, but he wanted to know what it would take for me to sell. That was the number.
And to be quite honest, if he would have ponied up that kind of cash, my car would have a new owner.

I have been approached a few times and I just say not for sale thank you, one man at the gas station in town said everyone has a price 8) I just say 10k could not buy it and I know it's not worth that much :happy10: You would be surprised how many people say mom or dad had one just like it.
I had to put a big not for sale sign on a few E-bodies cars back in the day at home just to keep folks away while I was busy :happy10:
I enjoy talking to folks and showing what I have dun to her, I guess I have the time to gab when this happens 8)

Funny I went through this once and did say 25,000 and their jaw dropped and they almost got mad.

I had to explain to them, look it is not for sale at the moment, but you asked what it would take for me to sell it, so after thinking about what I plan on doing to this car to get it the way I want I came up with 25K, b/c that is what it WOULD be worth if I accomplished all I wanted to with the car.

So do you want to pay me cash or set up some financing?

I can appreciate that. I can politely say no thank-you to a insult type offer.
I guess my point is, if your man enough to ask if it's for sale and your asked to make a reasonable offer, than you should be capable of doing just that and not have to keep badgering me for a price . Is it that hard to make an offer? Or is there a real need to ask, what do you want for it.
I just find it odd and at times aggravating how these scenarios play out.
So, what if I throw out $50k to get the person to move on, and he gets belligerent over it? What do you do?

If he gets belligerent over it, you put your pistol under his chin and tell him to Move It!
    Works every single time.

The way my gasser build is going, I'd say $2,000 for the car------------------ plus $18,000 in labor.. I'm startin' to think all I got was a VIN tag with a door jam stuck to it... It's not that bad, but re-fabbin' a whole car takes some work, I'm enjoying though, even the countless hours invested...

Seems like I have this happen all the time when I am driving the newport, I usually just make up some random high number and say well it's not for sale but $30,000 will get you a new fine ride. I am still amazed at how many people get a little angry when I tell them it's not for sale....

I normally ask "is it for sale?" and if they say no, eh, so what? I normally proceed to look at the car anyhow and ask the owner a few questions. But asking someone "how much do you want?" is just a one time question, if they say well, make an offer or they say i dunno of if they state to make a reasonable offer in the first place, you'd make one. Just gotta use good judgement to make a good offer. Delivery of your offer is also key to not insulting the person.

Asking someone how much do you want over and over again is just stupid.

Usually in a deal like that the first person to mention a price is the loser. I get asked every day if my daily driver is for sale, its like a curse and a compliment at the same time.

Several weeks ago I was ready to leave from a Sheetz parking lot and a couple of broth`azz walked by, one looked down at my grill and said yeaoww, and yelled hey man sell me that car! I said, make me an offer I can`t refuse. He puts his hand in his pocket and says I`ll give you 5-K right now. I say pleeeze, He yells to his buddy, hey man he said pleeeze and laughs. I fire it up and he`s like yeaoww again. A dude parked next to me is laughing his ass off at em, He was funny, 5-k my:bootysha:

My standard answer is "Make me an offer I can't refuse". They usually just walk away after that. I think most are just fishing in hopes that they might find something for next to nothing.
