Just changing from small bolt pattern to big bolt pattern axles. I think the centering hole on the hubs for a body axles are smaller so my backing plates wont work

Yes, the center register is smaller on the stock A body 8-3/4 axles and the backing plate/drum flange offset is different also.

Any 65 up large bolt pattern rear drum sets will fit. Get the whole set-up if you can, drums, backing plates, hardware. I have a few sets of late 70's 10x2-1/2" brakes from 7-1/4's and 8-1/4's that fit the 8-3/4's.

Where are you getting the axles from? Everything big bolt pattern OEM is too long to fit an A-body housing and if you get them aftermarket, you need to tell the manufacturer the housing you'll be using as well as the brakes. The bearing location has to be machined correctly for the brakes being used, as well as the register.

I just noticed the earlier post - no, B-body axles are too long to fit and they have a taper preventing them from being shortened & resplined.

I believe he was talking about getting the brakes from the B body rear end, not the axles.

But the brakes won't work unless he uses axles with the B/E body big bolt flanges, bearing offset and they are the correct length to fit the A-body housing. He didn't say what axles he has or plans on getting.

    as others have said,
it depends on what axles you get.

I bought mine from Moser, first thing they asked, was if I wanted A-body offset, or B-body offset.
I bought the A-body offset axles, which allowed me to keep my original backing plates, brakes, and drums. Just had to redrill the drum for the bigger 5-lug pattern.

Looks like i need to be educated on this, because after reading through this thread, i'm pretty confused. I am started the process of building up my rear end and will be using bbp axles. A couple of questions:

    1) Why would bolt spacing on the axle determine which backing plates to use?
    2) If i already have backing plates, how do know if they'll work with bbp axles?

This is exactly correct. I bought mine from Moser as well. On the phone they asked three questions:

    1) What brakes will you be using A body or B Body?
    2) What year is your car?
    3) What rear is in it?

My axles fit perfectly the first time. I used the B Body 10"X1 3/4" brakes, the backing plates, drums and hardware all came off the same car and they fit like a glove.
