I'm building a 318 (1973 built) for my car, right now it's a slant car with a 7-1/4 rear with 2:93 gears. The 318 will be a ~9-1 compression with an SP2P 4 barrel intake, using a small thermoquad (750cfm, if I remember right) I might be using headers, but im not sure if they fit yet. I'm also not sure if I'm changing the cam yet (stock cam).

So my question is, what is the best gearing for my combo? I'm not sure between a 3:23 or a 3:55. Should I stay with the 7-1/4, or find an 8-1/4? This is a daily driver, so I can't afford a busted rear end.

Any decent priced cam suggestions are welcome as well, I'm looking at the mopar performance cam and lifter kits now.

You should settle your mind on what you're doing with the engine.

If it were me, and no cam swap, and just a cruiser, I'd stick with the 7 1/4 with the gears you have.

Now, if you are swapping cams and want a little more pep in your step, forget that. 8 1/4 with 3:23's would be a nice change.

If'n you're gonna beat on it step up to an 8 3/4 with 3:55's (a little more fun factor).
