Ditto on the M&P Shield. I also have one in 9MM. My brother tried several other pistols before finally getting the Shield as I recommended in the first place.

I prefer no safety as well. Sig P290 DAO is what I carry.

It's not comfortable to shoot with the tiny little grips that come with it, so I got the boot grips for mine. Much more comfortable. Here's mine. Of course, Billy, being the eternal ham, had to ham it up and get in on the picture takin. lol

A friend of mine has one of those. He carries it in his pocket as well, backup for the .40 on his hip, lol.

I've carried a lot of different things before deciding to carry full time. A Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag, S&W 500 Mag with 8 3/8 barrel, Colt Delta Elite 10mm, Colt series 70 .45ACP, Rossi .357 revolver, and now I carry the little NAA revolver. I also have a Heritage six shot 4 3/4 barrel 22 mag I may carry. Since carrying this NAA, that will seem huge. lol Carrying big heavy guns gets old quick.

Yup, that's why I downsized to the Sig. I can carry it all day long and it isn't too much of a burden. My main reason was concealability.

People talk (argue) a lot about caliber. Thing is when it comes to concealed carry you want the one that you will actually want to carry regardless of caliber. A .22 in your hand is worth a hell of a lot more than the .45 that's at home. Second thing is that even though a big or powerful (read .357 mag, etc.) caliber might do more initial damage, a big caliber in a small package makes for a LOT of kick. In that light what I feel is important is the ability to do accurate follow up shots. A gun that kicks hard is harder to get back on target for follow up shots. The most effective bullet is a second or third one!

S&W SD9-ve great shooting half polymer and light weight.
Or Springfield Armory micro compact 45 acp. Super small, relatively lightweight 1911. Probably my favorite compact.
Those are the two I grab for a carry gun.

                          Nice try, ATF....
Lol. Just kidding. It all depends on you. I'm a smaller frame guy so a single stack M&P shield 9mm is perfect with 2 o'clock IWB leather holster.

My carry of choice is a Smith and Wesson model 19 38spl with 2.5" barrel.
The wife carries a Ruger LC380, when she carries which isn't very much.

In N.Y. we are limited on capacity. I looked into .45's and narrowed it to Glock and S&W. I tried them both at the range and found the M&P shield to be comfortable to shoot, very accurate, reliable and easily concealed. It also come in .40 and 9mm.
                                I highly recommend.

FWIW a double action revolver will fire quicker than a semi.
If you can't hit and disable your target with six shots, It's time for a sawed off pump. or grenade. lol

Back in the day we would drop a Kangaroo head shot from a 100 yards with .22

BIT, I am a firearms instructor and have been for many years, I also work at a public range. I train defensive shooting to both civilians and LEOs. Feel free to send me a PM. I have guided literally hundreds of students thru this question. I do not remember which reply it was but the gun shop owner gave you some spot on advice.

That sounds like a bunch of fun. Closes we get is head shots of coyotes with the 22 and shooting ground squirrels with 17WSM from a 100 yards.

Did you know Kangaroos are endangered in California? Can’t buy a kangaroo leather motorcycle jacket...

I'm going to recommend looking at the Ruger LCP. I looked at the new higher capacity LCP over the weekend (the double stack model, not the LCP II) and it's on my get-next list.
The LCP one fits in a pocket, doesn't print, and was threatening enough to make a couple of robbers vacate the premises during a little incident last year.

I love the LCP but the new II and hi cap model have way better sights, triggers, and in one case, capacity. It's basically revolver mechanics in a semi auto.

The wife & I both carry Ruger .380's with the Ruger (only) extended magazine loaded with critical defense rounds. She carries hers in an inside the waistband holster, I carry mine in a belt holster with my shirt covering it. Many of the places we frequent know we are carrying, as well as 80+ % of the other customers & guests.
