Boogered door/fender edges repair?

I admit I never have had to deal with this, only maybe just a minor booger. I occsionally venture off into the dark side, in this case I have always wanted a 64 or 5 Merc Comet. 64 is one year model. Sheetmetal is not plentiful.
You know the drill, look for a cheap project!! It will be a solid fun driver, sorta a A/FX looking thing. Like said, solid not perfect BJ crap.

I found sorta locally, locally a 64 that the seller said was bought off some dopers, that replaced the front clip, and somehow manage to booger the edge of door and fender pretty darn good, they still open and shut but need major fixing. Wrinkled bad on edges about 1 inch in.

I imagine the fenders can be hammered back decent, but the door? I figure my best bet is cutting off the boogered skin in that area and butt welding in patches? Sorry I have no pics, its on my "maybe "list!

i have a 62 fairlanne
My HS car decades ago was a 64 Ford Custom (2 door post) 289 and three on tree. Pretty heavy for that SB!

After 4 decades building Mopar, I like the learning curve of something new. Besides decent Mopar projects are getting scarce!! What isn't!?

The fenders on 64 & 65 Comets are special, the doors are the same as 64-65 Falcon... Pretty easy to find...

I wound up getting a 64 Comet 202 project. IF I had a place to have hid that 66 Comet I would picked it up also! haha

I have been on FABO some 14 years and one of many things I love about this site, is that we can talk some about non Mopars here without war!.

I had a car where it looked like someone just opened the door up and slammed the edge into a wall. The edge of the door was pushed in about 1/2" from damn near the top to the bottom of the door. I was able to hammer and dolly it out to get it about 90% to where it needed to be. This is with no real body skills. I imagine someone with a little more experience with stretching metal could have gotten it near perfect with just a skim coat of filler.

Best advice I got on it was to not attempt to fix the door with 30 or 40 strikes of the hammer. Instead use about a thousand lighter strikes to slowly massage it back out to where it used to be. Was a bit time consuming but I was happy with the outcome.

Patience is the key, without seeing the damage it's hard to say if it is repairable, but I have been surprised more than a few times by what I have accomplished with patience.

OP, could you cut that section of metal out, then use the flange tool weld in sheet metal but also ,using benders to go over the edge of the door frame? basically you'd be using sheet metal to make a lower door or corner patch. It would involve drilling the existing spot welds at the door frame i would assume. Hopefully you can picture what I'm typing LOL! but yes id use a flange tool not butt weld etc. also, once down to the door frame you can hammer,dolly and straighten the frame if needed.

I decided on getting a different Comet 64 post car. I like them better than that 66. I agree, I could have either straightened them and/or did some welding patches and make new edges.

A few decade ago, we just got different doors/fenders out of the boneyard!!!!!

Yup, I remember in my area in the 90s A body Mopars were still in bone yards...they dried up quick though by 2000s they were being picked clean by parts sellers.

Yep, the buzzards went to the boneyard..bought a part for $20 and sold it on FeeBay for $50, but today they sell that same part on EvilBay for $250, IF they can find it!
Life used to FUNNER!!!! (Yes spelling cops that is a word!!!) ha

Yup Funner for sure... When I got into Mopars they were cheap, nobody wanted them... I bought a 71 Hemi Challenger for $400... My 68 Coronet R/T I gave $300... I had a T/A that I gave $1500 for but I got six truckloads of parts with it... Times have changed & it ain't nearly as fun anymore...

Back in Mo. I started to see big boneyards get crushed, usually the owner just retired or died off in the 90s. By 2000 it was really getting bad. Now, it is a lost cause! Old cars, Mopars were so much fun when you found them around when looking, or even ads in the KC Sunday paper, and just word of mouth. Us old guys relate, the younger gen just imagines!!
Prices??? But wages in the 90s were notlike today, but INFLATION!!!!
