My new water pump came with a 3/4 x 1/2 HDPE bushing in the heater hose port. The old pump also had this bushing. The nozzle fitting has an adapter to go from 1/2" back up to 3/4" to accept the 3/4" hose nipple. Why bush it from 3/4 to 1/2, just to go back up to 3/4 nipple? Do I need to use the bushing?

There are manfolds/cast iron water pumps that use 2 different sized by-pass hoses, depending on year.
You have the adapters nec to use either configuration .
Use the ones required to fit your bypass hose .

OK, thanks. I'll just use the 3/4" nipple and screw directly into the pump, leaving out the bushing and adapter. I don't like to use bushings because removing them later can be a real booger. Maybe that's why they used HDPE, so it could be cut out if necessary.
