I usually try to not rush into projects so I can think on them awhile but have any of you guys made up a set of V blocks for checking valve lift. Trying to avoid putting blocks on engine stands to check valve lift on a few cams. Something of course portable that I could easily check out some big and small block cams I’d like to sell. Just to double check what I’m seeing with calipers and mics.

Could you make them out of hickory? Some hard wood....were not checking +- .0001.

Wood and I Dont really get along too well. I went ahead and placed an order for the suggested V blocks above. That will save me from making something and I have other uses for them. Thanks for the ideas though.

Nice prices for high dollar inspection tool on eBay. I would not have bought them from India, but those should work for what you are doing. I have a set of home made aluminum V blocks for quick checks. I should get a used pair with clamps, either Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, or Mitutoyo.

If I was smart I would maybe upgrade my Chuck on my lathe and learn how to use it. Then I could do stuff like this the smart way. Being over in my house garage doesn’t help any.

Current chuck won't hold centers?

It’s an old craftsman lathe that I would like to update the old four jaw Chuck. It’s probably not necessary but when I get something in my cement head it’s hard for me to change my mind. If it was in my shop I would be forced to learn how to use it.

Funny you should ask... I just ordered steel to make a set of large Vee blocks... But for what your doing I'd probably just do something like this...

3" Cast Iron V Block Set Of 2 Pieces 3" x 1-1/4" x 2-1/4" Inch Vee Block 2 Pcs | eBay

Well the V-blocks worked out great. I ended up ordering a different set too off of Amazon due to the other set not getting here for awhile. These arrived Saturday so I checked out a couple purple shaft cams tonight. Thanks again.

My son bought a cam fixture from Mario Andretti's 3n1 race shop in NJ where we bought his sprint car fixture. It has 4 pizza cutter looking wheels with precision bearings. we put a shaft on it and spun it. Walked out of the room and came back It was still spinning. If he didn't take it to the new shop I'll get a picture of it. Home made but pretty cool with over lapping pizza cutter wheels. Fitted with sliding and adjustable dial indicator . Marios. old shop had some pretty cool equipment. We came home with some unique tools.
