i have a 383 a-833 from a 69 cuda and want to convert it to be behind a 440 instead. what do i need to get to do this and make it into a 18 spline transmission. i know the 440/Hemi a-833 was a heavy duty trans and i want my trans to live behind my 440. can it be done and how and with what parts?

Buy a good clutch and you don't need to use the Hemi stuff unless you just want to spend money.

No need to convert anything. Just bolt it together.

Just change the gears, input shaft, and cluster gear. Pretty pricey.

Just change just about any rotating piece inside the case. Not sure it's doable. The mainshaft/ case bearing may even be different.

Those are what you need, that is different, to upgrade to the 18 spline input shaft. Original mainshaft was hardened, but an A body mainshaft is plenty stout. As is the standard A833. I was just listing what one would have to change if they wanted to upgrade to the 18 spline input shaft trans. I would run what I had, unless I found a deal on an 18 spline trans. Or I wanted a Passon Performance Hemi O/D.

You also need an 18 spline bearing retainer.

        A stout 360 can make similar low-end torque to a stock 69 440 Magnum.
Mine eats clutch discs but the non od A833s I have been using, are just fine. To be fair, I run 100% on the street, so getting traction is challenge, lol. Even so, it has ripped all the teeth off the input/cluster of one overdrive unit.
I agree with YR; the clutch is the key.
        Or how you use it.
        and traction.

        That's cuz the rest of it didn't fit; really it's;
440streetfishw/mt,burns rubber in every gear which is a ton-O-fun, but around turns with 235 front street tires (about the biggest I could fit in there), that BB whips me around backwards about 50% of the time, with just a tiny bit too much throttle, and that really really sucks; cuz there I sit on the center boulevard again, pointing the wrong way again, and boy I hope the cops didn't see this again, and I'm running out of matching aluminum wheels .... I used to be embarrassed when this happened but I now realize it ain't my fault, and there's probably a good reason Ma Mopar didn't put many of these on the road, and I guess I'm living the why of it......I don't know what I was thinking;Oh, I remember now, my neighbor Bob had this ugly old 440 motorhome engine sitting in the corner, and I had this 69 Barracuda with a tired old 383 in it, and over a few drinks one night a deal was struck, and daymn those beers, ifenow that 440 isn't itching for go-time....... So it's one-fourth Ma's fault, and one-fourth on Bobby, and the third fourth I'm throwing on the foamy drinks. But the last fourth is on Bobby's wife who when she came out get her husband, I lost all sense of direction.I shoulda never gone over there; life is hard ,and then it stinkith.
No this is not my story; I have never had a 440, and my neighbor's name is not Bobby, and his wife is nearly my age which if you get my drift, don't interest me at all, but most of all, neither of us drinks alcohol.
Hey,OP; fish-stink; I'm just funnin'ya. If you need someone to dislike, meet me over in the N&P

well as a mostly Chevy man my life i started to wonder about the control of my 69 fish and if the idea of my 440 install was starting to stink. no matter after the fog cleared my mind, i started to suspect you story was stinking to high heaven. you see about 75% of my cars are big block 4 speeds and that besides the point of knowing a Hemi in one was on my fish list but i found a low millage 440 and 727 from a 76 vintage. My plan was a street driven beer can heads and a 440 source bottom kit to lighten it up some with the other normal beer can intake, water pump etc. now if i put a mini tub and stage 3 body reinforcement kit in it, i should be good. since no one makes front fenders in metal i decided it would make sense get fantastic plastic fenders and add the 6 pack scoop hood this should kick a little more fat to the curb. plan on using the new fool injection 6 B.B.L. that just came out and i think will make a few older children envious but still smile to see or ride in it. after 8 toys of all the other brands i found a good floor, door, and rockers solid 69 Cuda body for cheap. Rear skins will be replaced and about 3-4 inches of lower wheel well on the passenger side will have me going in the right direction fast. Now i am thinking of selling my rebuilt too many spline trans and get a reman 18 spline or a passion kit for my new toy. Got this trans from a guy in Saskatchewan that had a warranty trans that belonged to a 383 dart. my concern was since the 383 is so much like a 440 why the needed upgrade because i know these trans are tougher than my G.M. stuff. thanks for the psych and i have no hate but only a face palm moment till like i said , the fog of bulls..t went away.

Well you could do what I did; leave the 7260 Ujoint on the rear of the driveshaft as a fuse.... but I don't recommend it. It didn't take long and my 367 heaved it's driveshaft out onto the road going into second.
I had one of those adapter joints back there 7260 to 7290 on the diff. Inspection showed that the 7290 seemed to be Ok so I rebuild the driveshaft, now with a 1350 on it to match the 1350 on the front behind the GVod. So now I run a 1350 to 7290 adapter, and that's been back there since about 2005? not sure, but a long long time.
But I confess, I took the CFII disc out at that time as well because it was just too harsh for a streeter. I swapped in a factory 340 disc, which became my new fuse, lol. And so, after blowing a couple of those out, and shredding a couple of A833ods, I reduced the clamp on the Diaphragm. After blowing another disc, I threw that Overdrive A833 out so I didn't have to split the gears all the time, swapping in a Commando box instead and stopped splitting gears at full power.
So in 5 or 6 years, the attrition was 3 transmissions, 4 or more discs, 1 driveshaft, 1 shifter, now on the third cam, 3 intakes, 4 carbs, 6 engine-outs,at least 6 different rear gears tried;2 of which spit off teeth,1 ignition system,1 driver's seat and a lotta tires. I think that about covers it.
All this with a little 367, 100% street-driven; I'm starting to think that I might just be the lousiest daymn mechanic I know. Car has gone 93 in the Eighth, with no track-tuning; on it's one and only successful run.
To be fair, since about 2007, the car has not broke anything; it's just really hard on tires; I buy them in bulk,lol..

Small bearing 18-spline front bearing retainer is not really available (might find a used one, but...). To build an A-body 18-spline you need a 308 bearing case (I've used an iron overdrive case) and all of the 18-spline gears and the 18-spline bearing retainer. AND, a different bell housing to take the larger bearing retainer.

I got mine from Passon Performance. I'm not going to change my setup if I want to change drive trains.

I don't think that was available when I had my last 18-spline (early trans, missing bearing retainer). I got good money for the trans without it, though. My son still has the A-body 18-spline that I built in the early 90s.
