I am reaching out to get a little bit of help identifying an engine. I have read as much as I can on the forum to properly identify, however this is an interesting case. I am looking to replace the slant six in my 1973 Gold Duster 225/904 auto—-current one has nearly 1 inch of crank end play but still runs surprisingly well.
I have an engine that was purported to be from a 1968 Plymouth Valiant with a three speed manual transmission. I have nowhere I’ve actually proving that this information is accurate. I ended up getting the engine over 12 years ago from a guy who got it from a guy who may have gotten it from a guy. You know how that story is.
The casting number on the block indicates a 1966 cast. It is a 3 freeze plug block and the 10,000 day calendar date indicates it was built July 27, 1967—right at the point where it could have been a 67 or 68 model.
Given all of the conflicting info I am very hesitant to try and use this engine.
Am I missing something with the info I have found or could this engine just be a freak of Mopar? Is there any other way of checking the crank counter bore to make sure it will work with a later transmission? Is it possible it’s an old block with new (68–up) internals. Or given it was a manual car could they have just used an old (67) engine if it was an early build? Or maybe it was just a 67 to begin with...?????
I have an opportunity to get a 1971 slant that I know will work. The freak motor could then be scrapped to help the Chinese expansion efforts. Or it could be yours if you want to come get it. The price will be right. I’ll help load it well. Or if anyone is interested in a really nice 73 Gold Duster with a bad slant six—let me know. You could save me the trouble of the swap.
Any help is appreciated.
@slantsixdan—I know you are very knowledgeable with this. Enjoy your slant six insight.
Thank.
