Hello all. I want to get yalls general opinion on a matter. My new boss, is also a car guy we have got to talking about cars and such. He is a member of a car club that is somewhat local (about an hour away, 80 miles or so) he has a very nice restored 71 chevy c 10 with a 402. He invited me to go to the car shows with him this summer. As a general how do car guys feel about unfinished cars in car shows? My car is nowhere near complete but it does run and drive now and is a WIP! Would it insult or piss anyone off to bring a wip and park it beside a fully restored car?

i would walk by 2 dozen fresh out of the showroom cars to look at that one
especially if you will be there to point out what you did and are doing to it

and anyone there who restored their car should love it and be like "i remember dealing with that, this is what i did, and, make sure you pay close attention to, and, if i could do it again i would do this instead of that"

of course the check writers will be pissed off but phooey on them

I guess it depends on what you're expecting to experience from the car show. Some people will view it negatively and when sitting next to a bunch of show show cars it will look somewhat out of place. I showed a 90% original 340 swinger 4-speed that was in what I considered very good condition overall and even at that some people turned its nose up at it there were always a few that just loved it. If you're going just to enjoy the cars and get some ideas that's great. I would just park it in one of the back rows where you'll usually find project cars just my two cents.

We all start somewhere, if someone turns up their nose you may not want to be their friend anyway

If you go mainly worried about what others are thinking, then wait till you're finished the car completely and join the crowd who are there just to impress others. If you want talk to other like minded car people and learn and educate, then go and enjoy.

Some shows have different categories; daily driver, under construction, etc. So no, I do not think your car would be out of place.

Personally, I enjoy a wide variety of cars and conditions. And usually the cars under construction are great for conversation

Many cars have a work in progress or a unfinished division. I have a lot of fun with my 66 and it's faded out chalky paint.

I have taken more than one unfinished car to shows, for me almost I got more interest in them than my finished ones.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have never had a car in a car show, although I have been to several car shows locally and I've never seen a clunker in them lol I have seen like modern new vehicles and thought that doesn't belong! I just didn't want to be that guy lol. I would like to join this car club and didn't want to piss a bunch of them off on my first outing haha. It a pretty large club for this area they have a couple hundred members and several mopars including a surviving all original superbird!

I have taken my rat rod to many shows, just for the conversation and better parking spot. The first show I got parked next to a Ford GT40. Rather drastic difference there. Now I will be bringing the Demon to shows, it was in a garage since 1984, chips and marks on it, but it is way more fun than a perfect restored car..I say take it and have fun, especially when rain comes and they all scatter like the world will end.

Screw what people think. Everyone's car is a WIP at one point. When it's done you can show it and say you did it yourself and remember the last time ya saw it?

I never worried or cared about what others thought of my car during the under construction phase, which lasted a few years. Anyone who disses it would probably be the same way if it were done so screw 'em and enjoy it.

allright, lets try a different approach...do you trust your boss?

has he seen pictures of your dart?

if both of those are a yes, then why worry?
clearly, if he knows what your car looks like, and he invited you, then dont you think he thinks you will fit in?

You might be shocked how much attention your car gets.
My Bro in law took his survivor 55 Coronet and was so embarrassed that he left the show on foot.
Came back to a trophy in the front seat.

You could put a sign or note on it describing how long you have owned the car and how long it sat until you resurrected it, that will likely be enough for naysayers to understand that we don't all have 6 figure restorations.

Would love to see your unfinished car at a show. Never mind what some people would say about it because there the same people that are gonna talk bad about a nicely finished car.
You might find some people with the same project and shape as yours with some good ideas to talk about.

a few years ago i took a church buddy to the Mopars at the Red Barns show
i was driving my duster and intended to park with the visitors and just watch the show

but as i came to the gate, the guy tells me general admission is to the left, but show cars go to the right, so i need to go to the right

so i explained to him i wasnt showing the duster, just driving it
but then he convinced me, entry fee was 5 dollars, but parking and admission would be 3 times as much...so i decided to show the duster
