I have a 70 Duster that I want to have my cellphone mounted so I can see it while I'm driving. Thinking about the ashtray area but looking for ideas from those that have done this. Thanks guys.

I think up in line of sight is safer
I've thought about something magnet like
to stick to the dash to the rt of instruments

Get one of the vacuum/magnetic mounts and the appropriate phone case. Put it as low down on the driver side corner of the windshield just below your normal line of sight. I have these mounts in my racecar, my truck and the wife's 300s. we stumbled across them on Temu of all places.

I've tried a few different things and nothing really worked.

Either they didn't fit the intended area, were awkward, or didn't keep the phone where I could glance briefly and get a meaningful read.

Just yesterday I found a $3 thrift store unit that clips on the mirror and has a ton of adjustments.

So far, I like it.

I tried a stick-on magnetic pad that held the phone by a thin metal pad attached to the phone. It doesnt work very well as the phone keeps slipping off. I went to a suction cup version as shown in the above links, its a much better system.

Don't. Really shitty idea. If I had my way, a phone mount the driver can see would be illegal, involving mandatory jail time.

Hmmm... OK, glad you are not making the rules! There is no problem with *glancing* at a phone while driving. No different than glancing at the radio to change a station, etc.

That's the way its going here. Even at a stop light not supposed to look in either NJ or Pa, I forget which one, or maybe its both states.
Driver is allowed to hands-free. One of these days I'll pick up a blue-tooth ear set for the occassional times I need to talk on the phone. I'm sure it would be equally effective for driving directions but that's not something I care to for.

Ironicly, I really don't see the difference between having a screen with a gps map in the dash and a map on a big cell phone. Maybe that is allowed by law, just not texting and watching youtube.

Exactly. No difference at all. I have an app on my phone to show the AFR, RPM, and speed. I sometimes glance at that at different times to see what the engine is doing. I can either have the phone with the app open on the seat next (often sliding around) to me or have it stationary, which is safer by far.

I have a mounting device that can clamp to headrest posts. It was an idea to use a cell phone like a gopro during autocross but didn't work out. It's not quite the same as you're asking but I'll PM you a picture later. The headrest posts might be too close to each other on our cars for it to work.

I don't see the difference either.
If I had my way, they'd only work if the car is in park.
I'll never own a car that has one. Radios should have knobs, tv's should be in the house, and I can use a paper map.

I got one of these from the flea market for my van. It works pretty good. Almost too good as it take some effort to remove it. Releasing the mechanism that secures the phone takes getting used to to as well. $8
Mine has a button you press to open then press to close. (automatic) Works great. Wirer less charge. Wire goes in the base of the holder.

Glancing at a GPS display to verify where your next turn is, is WAY different than being involved in a two way text conversation, voice call, or watching a podcast/movie/cat video.

WAY different.

Audi has a digital instrument cluster that can be toggled to display the Navi screen . Super cool !

It is basically the equivalent of glancing at your speedometer.

Here's the one I found the other day.

No brand name ;(

In the current config, the phone is actually below the level of the hood.NOT blocking view.
I'm also going to try the example, where it is in the same line as the mirror.

...and also I will try flipping it over, so the horizontal part is above the mirror, in the dead zone.

It is LESS intrusive into the view than the factory plastic box around the windshield sensors, which I couldn't stand and removed.

I prefer the windshield mount, keeps the phone as low as possible, and as close to the USB charge port I installed.

Also it was on sale locally so I could actually see it, put my hands on it, and determine if it was garbage or not, which is a rarity today.

iOttie Easy One Touch 5. Very sturdy and adjustable, came with a magnetic mount as well, but sticking it on the dash put it too far out in the cabin, unless you have a backseat driver.

A-bodies have limited windshield real-estate to begin with, throw in a dash cam, ez-pass, phone, giant hood scoop, registration and inspection stickers, it's challenging to keep it clear.

Last trip I took I had an excellent co-pilot, but I think we're forgetting GPS or Google maps have voice, you don't even have to look at it.
