(yes, i know it is only october)

getting my christmas carol list ready i came across one that is particularly appropriate for the political climate

it is a poem written by Henry Longfellow on Christmas Eve 1864 as he nursed him son back to health who got shot during the battle of New Hope Church

now, the poem is just awesome
i love how it shows the despair of man and builds up to the hope of our Savior

HOWEVER

every
single
version

i can find omits the 3rd 4th and 5th verse (and with them, every reference to the civil war)
and they turn this deep poetry into a little diddy

some of the even manage to mess up the meter (yes, im looking at you casting crowns)
or fall into the trap of modern music where they think they can add something to a song by repeating a line ad nauseum (thats you, mercyme)

anyway, if you got a copy of a complete and good version, let me know

otherwise i might be forced to ask @RustyRatRod to record one for us

oh, and here is the poem

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

Thanks for posting this. It's one of my favorites.
I've heard it sung with the 3rd verse, but I don't recall ever hearing it with the 4th and 5th.

this is the closest i have found to a complete version and she sure puts some feeling behind it...but still missing 2 verses and i really dislike the change at the end
