Does anyone know what this is and if it's fixable? Not looking for "fix it by replacing it" answers.

What happened? It's almost like it got sand blasted or something. I've never seen that before.

It was like that when I bought it. Doesn't clean off, like it's in the middle.

Oh yeah...could be. Seems that would clean up pretty easy though.

Is the side window glass 2 ply like a windshield?(look at the top edge)
I had a 56 ford pickup that had that type of side glass and odd things can happen to the plastic in between.

It is possible that the glass got acid etched by mistake some how.

0000 steel wool and rubbing alcohol might fix it.

If it is between layers of glass a little heat may make it go away. Be very careful tho..

The cloudiness could be caused by de-lamination, the OP stated it wouldn't clean off.

Windshields are typically laminated glass. Side glass is typically tempered BUT back in the day (my 56 Ford PU for instance) the side glass was laminated as well. Don't know when all side glass changed to tempered.

If it is on the surface, the razor blade idea is by far the best idea.

If you slide your hand across the area and feel any type of roughness then it on the surface and you can polish it out.

Stop by your local glass shop. May be they could tell you. You may have to replace it.

looks like a ghost hand trying to drive your car. lol
If it's any kind of overspray/ residue, lacquer thinner should take it off.

            Should be tempered.
So its a single layer of glass.
The older trucks commonly had duallite as it could be made by a glass shop to replace a broken one.

It's on the outside. Tried paint thinner and a razor both had no effect.

Try a "magic" eraser and elbow grease?

If a magic eraser doesn't work you might try window cleaner and newspaper. It almost, but not quite, looks like the milkiness that was on my windshield when I bought my dart that had been parked for years. My windshield was mottled/patterned looking though.... where the condensation had been and dried then repeated the cycle for who knows how many years. I used regular window cleaner and newspaper to clean mine. There is something in the ink in newspaper that shines glass. Just don't use the colored or glossy pages of the newspaper.
