Having lived in close proximity to so many diabetics, I have seen the symptoms. Thankfully none of them lost limbs.
But thanks for the heads-up. I'll keep it in mind.

Just an FYI the reason the high fructose is worse is because it is more refined and the body can absorb it a lot faster than sugar. A nurse practitioner explained it to my diabetic mother in law, this way. The HFCS is absorbed so quickly into your system that i cannot be processed fast enough by iirc the liver?, so it spikes your blood sugar and you get a super high, then a crash. Sugar is a more natural less refined product and a sucrose, so it is absorbed more slowly over a longer period of time as the body takes longer to process it.

I feel it this way, the regular pepsi and Mt dew have corn syrup, they have throwbacks made with real sugar. The regulars give an immediate sugar rush, but the throwbacks give a nice pick me up.

Sorry for the long windedness and i probally sound preachy so please forgive me in advance!

No shit? The chow hall at Mare Island (DS A and C School) was good. Gained back all the weight I lost in boot camp. Now that food sucked.

I think the reason Miramar sucked is the transient nature of many of the people, AKA squadrons came and went. We got one CO who for a time implemented cold cuts sandwich bar for lunch. The darn place was overloaded, guys were clawing to get those sandwiches. They had all kinds of different meats. It did not last long, there was some rhumor "it cost too much"

One huge problem for me is I was brought up on spuds. I still like spuds, but don't eat them as much. The ones at Miramar tasted bad, were seldom really done, and often cold. The joke was you put butter on them and it got HARDER LOL

Another much hated detail at Miramar were the "four wheel drive" shopping carts in the commissary. All 4 wheels swiveled on the carts. Think about that for a bit LOL

All I can picture is a drunken sailor pushing his buddy home from the EM Club in one. Haha.

Del, when I was stationed at Mare Island, some of the Bases in the Bay Area had intramural football teams. Tackle, full pads. I played for Mare Island. We played Moffett Field, Treasure Island, Alameda, and also played San Quintin. They had a team believe it or not. Of course all their games were home games. LOL
Not many people can say they have played football at San Quentin.
        You remember anything like that?

And HERE is a story!!! For a short time, we had TOPLESS DANCERS at the station EM club. My job, (I was an ET worked on GCA RADAR) was 24 on/ 48 off so I had a lot of time off. I drove by the thing one day about 1:30--2PM in the afternoon and it was LOADED on a working day. My understanding is that pissed off wives and CPOs missing crew put a stop to that.

This was a CO that was 'all in' on the Zumwalt strategy.

Coke zero here. I shouldnt being a diabetic. I've heard that even the sweeteners trick your body into thinking its sugar and harm can still be done?
Pepsi to me is flatter than pi$$ on a plate lol

Oh man, NOTHING would surprise me from back in those days. The stories from the Chiefs barracks parties where still legendary when I got to Mare Island. Uncle Ronny, just say no, and Not in my Navy was in full swing by the time I got there. Zummy was out. Probably for the best, lol.

No all I was there for was school. I spent most of my time either off base with friends, or hanging out at the ham club. We had a MASSIVELY cool ham club in those days. If you were licensed General class or better, you could "stand watch" at the ham club and not in the barracks. 68-69. Search K6NCG, there are I think three websites with photos of the club. Back then it was out by the NW end of the Island next door to that nuke school whatever it was called

This is an old photo from the Stoddard site, but this was our building as I knew it, Alcatraz, Golden Gate in the haze behind

At some point after I left there and got to Miramar, they moved the club somewhere else

This is most likely me up the tower. I helped build the 6M ground plane below on the sidearm

I spent a fair amount of time operating the magnificent Collins 75A-4 receiver, Hallicrafters HT37 transmitter on CW (Morse) or RTTY. I helped bring the device on top, part of a URA-8 terminal unit for RTTY back from one of the mothball ships at Mare Is. We also bagged some newer RTTY machines, not shown here

Im soda sober 4 years now. Quit cold turkey on New years eve 2015. Was drinking 40oz super big Gulp and pissing out 45oz every time. I was drying up! All I drink nowadays is water and an occasional powerade (not that different than soda) or an Arizona herbal tonic (Tea, orange juice and a bunch of extracts of weird Asian plants). speaking of Chow halls: tiny one in the jungle of Naval Magazine, Subic Bay, PI. Insert Filipino accent here "How would you like your rice, boiled or steamed...would you like a side of rice with that?" Aw c'mon Joe, whats for lunch then? "...rice". NAS Cubi Point was better. And the "Company" parties out in town, Nude floor shows with bottles, stacks of coins....'hands free' blow guns popping balloons from 5 feet away! Raffle prize was a bar girl for the night.. That ain't happening in today's Navy for sure.

I grew up with and still see the word NASTY as meaning a person that willingly does sexual things.
Look at a dictionary from before 1990. You will see that the definition means naughty, promiscuous or sexual.

About 40 years ago I met a guy who had worked at a Reynolds Aluminum Plant. He said 3 of the 4 acids used to sterilize aluminum foil are in a coca-cola. I was battling bleeding stomach ulcers at that time and couldn't drink the stuff anyway. Wife drinks waaaaay too much pepsi. Coffee or tea for me.

I'm on the God diet. If God made it it is good. If man messed with it, I don't want anything to do with it. So, ,sugar is good in moderation. I avoid HFCS and any other food that does not satisfy my hunger. Don't get me started on what they try to pass off as food nowadays. I still enjoy a Dr Pepper occasionally, but I mostly drink water or southern home made sweet iced tea made with sugar. Don't drink much and rarely thirsty? Hmmmmmmmmmmm??

Yeh I drink a lot if ice tea. Fortunately, this area has decent tap water. Even if I buy bottled water mostly for "in the rigs" , I actually re-use the bottles several times

                        I agree whole-heartedly.
And so, I frequent the only restaurant around, that seems to care. I know the cook, and am familiar with the great staff; but I'm down to once a week,or less.

Unfortunately for me, the price of a 10oz Coke here, has gone up to $2.80,(bottomless mind you), and I refuse to pay that, so; in the restaurant, it's water only, which is still free.. Our local water is actually mighty fine........ until they poison it with chemicals, to make it "fit for human consumption". We live atop an underground river, and the water is well filtered by vast amounts of Agassiz gravel.

Nothing more true than coming back to the ship from a 3 week field excercise (in Korea, in NOVEMBER!) and having ...Steak and lobster...or ice cream..or even pizza! And of course heat and a mattress to sleep on. 30 foot swells? Didnt even notice them the first night back......Ooh Rah!

I worked at a place as a lab technician that made sodas rock stars and so forth. Every other day we would get a 2 trailer 18-wheel tanker and it would empty its load out into our reserve tanks..
                            Sucrose.....

I remember a story that friend of mine told me. He used to work at one of the Coke plants where they mix the ingredients using the raw products. His told me that the towers where the ingredients were mixed were 4 or 5 stories high. He had to climb (grated stairways) to the different levels to take samples for quality control of the product at each step of the process. He worked there for quite a few years. His main complaint was that every couple of years (3-4 years) the metal grates would get so corroded from the chemical ingredients (spillage, leaks, overflows, taking test samples, etc) that it would become unsafe to climb. The "stuff" they put in Coke would eat the metal grates to the point of failure!! He said that it was a real pain to shut down a tower to replace all the stairways and platforms just so he could take his samples. He remembers walking on the grating as it "stuck" to his rubber boots....sticky sugars and other chemicals). He said that after that job he would NEVER drink a Soda again because it would gross him out knowing what the chemical ingredients did to all that heavy metal grating..........DRINK UP AND ENJOY!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::mad::poke::realcrazy::wtf:

Oh yeah as a lab technician I had to sample and check tanks and stuff like that. Sometimes you have to stick your head in one of the tanks of syrup to see how low it's getting so the filler station knows when to shut off before it just starts filling the cans with soda water LOL.. anyways especially the Rockstar it was so potent in its concentrated form that it would take your breath away completely! I would pull my head out and start choking and coughing so bad I thought I was going to puke...
